Title: Hi everyone, new missions!
Post by: Kyth on November 06, 2010, 10:43:23 AM
Hello!

As I've mentioned before, I have been mucking around with the Steel Fury Mission Editor for the longest time.
And eventually, I came up with something playable! Here's a little blurb about the mission:

Kyth Mission 1

In this semi-historical scenario, the Red Army has pulled off a nasty surprise with their initial Spring offensive in the Kharkov area.
Elements of the 3rd Panzer division (that's you) have to deal with the developing situation, which could only be described as 'a ghastly mess'.

(http://lh3.ggpht.com/_Hbtk24rNEPw/TNTRMoJEbKI/AAAAAAAAACI/WWALzWXf2o8/s800/shot_2010_10_24_13_39_24_0000.jpg)

Download the mission here:
http://www.4shared.com/file/4lF8khES/KythMission01.html (http://www.4shared.com/file/4lF8khES/KythMission01.html)

As always, you have to add a new line in the user_camp.engcfg file to get it to show up:
New_KY_01, txt_mc_mymission_1, 1, 0, Back_KY01.tga, txt_cit_02, 20, txt_history_tky_1, hist_map_teach, levels\levels\cm_users\New_KY_01.level;

Good hunting!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's the 2nd mission in this series, following on from the first one:

Kyth Mission 2

Your kampfgruppe has to reopen the supply lines to your beleaguered front-line defenders. Dark and stormy night, rain falling in torrents, enemy strongpoint to be captured! Your quick thinking and skill could spell the difference between victory and defeat...

(http://lh3.ggpht.com/_Hbtk24rNEPw/TOaTqc_TUsI/AAAAAAAAAEM/cTxAPEql-44/s800/shot_2010_11_02_00_04_38_0001.jpg)

You can download the mission here:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's the 3rd mission in the series, following the events in mission 2.

Kyth Mission 3

The encircled defenders have hung on grimly for the past 2 days, throwing back repeated assaults on their positions.
Now, can they hold on for much longer? ... Make sure that they do!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's the 4th mission in the series, following the events in mission 3:

Kyth Mission 4

The enemy is planning another of their pre-dawn attacks. Your kampfgruppe's task is to launch a pre-dawn attack on the pre-dawn attackers!
Just don't let them pre-empt your pre-emptive strike...

(http://lh3.ggpht.com/_Hbtk24rNEPw/TQ18ALbxCWI/AAAAAAAAAFY/MkFdTWDiIpo/s800/shot_2010_11_27_22_39_51_0002.jpg)

Careful with this one, there's a lot of maneuvering to be done!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We have another one for you! The 5th Mission follows on after the events in Mission 4.

Kyth Mission 5

Your kampfgruppe is to make a quick strike on the enemy positions, Over the River and Through the Woods. Drill them full of Lead!

(http://lh6.ggpht.com/_Hbtk24rNEPw/TSc6cAtyQtI/AAAAAAAAAHc/FxsI8l5NCKg/s800/shot_2010_12_18_18_23_08_0000.jpg)

By the way, here's a tip: Set your platoon formation to 'none', if you're ordering them across the river.  You will need every tank you have!

Have fun!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Are you ready for your next mission? This one (Number 6) follows on after the events in Mission 5:

Kyth Mission 6

As your Kampfgruppe maneuvers for its breakout, keep a close watch on the horizon... The Russians are not finished yet...

Here's a little tip for today: take good care of your infantry!

Have fun!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's another one to enjoy!

Kyth Mission 7

The enemy's retreat route rapidly becomes a 'Mud-way of Death'!  Make sure it's not actually your own...

(https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/_Hbtk24rNEPw/TVvao115iSI/AAAAAAAAAOI/Jvl7nsKeJeU/s800/shot_2011_02_08_18_59_18_0002.jpg)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As promised here's a tough one for you!

Kyth Mission 8

Noisy battles break out all along the river! You are there to ensure that tactical skill and good shooting keep the enemy well and truly clobbered.

(https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_Hbtk24rNEPw/TXtTbRLZb_I/AAAAAAAAAP4/xtZGUz16DfI/s800/shot_2011_03_05_17_53_19_0001.jpg)

Good luck!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Are you ready for your next mission? Something that follows on after the 'heroic' events in mission 8...

Kyth Mission 9
In this armoured clash, you shall be deciding the outcome; will good shooting win the day, or will it be your Last Stand ...?

(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_Hbtk24rNEPw/TY3aPSJkd-I/AAAAAAAAARE/71eLd2kP4LA/s800/shot_2011_03_06_12_34_15_0006.jpg)

Good hunting!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Get ready for your next mission!

Kyth Mission 10
The recent counterattack has resulted in the encirclement of a Rather Large enemy force. However, they will require a lot of "convincing" to actually stay captured... Elements of 3rd Panzer (you again) are on the scene!

(https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_Hbtk24rNEPw/TaiFc_PO3OI/AAAAAAAAARw/dPF0TPuVLdo/s800/shot_2011_04_04_00_21_27_0003.jpg)

Interesting mission for the PzIII, thx! The script is really complicated. It was a bit confusing, at first I didn’t understand that after “attack blocking” I’d have been moved to the Rat village, but secondly I got it over.
BTW
Instead time trigger(radio massage) u may use text trigger from editor. Like this:
triggers()
{
...
my_trigger, 0x2000d, txt_screen_my_massage, 0xffd0c0c0, 25.000;
...
}
where:
my_trigger – name trigger
0x2000d – operation code
txt_screen_my_massage – txt variable
0xffd0c0c0 – text color
25.000 – duration of text massage, sec
txt variable is described in mymission_loc_data.text
i.e.
txt_screen_my_massage () {We’re under fire;}
As for installation it’s been accustomed for me to using “Create new mission” -> “Unpack”.
I’ve packed your mission as New_KY_01.datapack.
At this point there’s no need to make a fix for the file … Steel Fury - Kharkov 1942\data\k42\loc_rus\levels\LEVELS\camp\user_camp.engcfg
The new mission line will write down automatically.

Yes, that's true, but the datapack installation misses out the extras, like the canned history, and the nice screenshot above.  :-\

Agree, but as my point it's optional.

  Kyth's mission really rocks! excellent atmosphere, good use of the Bereka map, plenty of action, artillery barrage, ambushes etc .

Players don't open your gunsights at the beginning of the mission otherwise chances are your gunsights will be damaged by the explosions.Wait until you leave the village and reach the blocking point.

Kyth the only criticism I have is : WHY DIDN'T YOU DO MORE OF THEM MAN! ;D

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all your comments! Much appreciated!

And yes, I have a couple more missions in the works (finishing touches) which I'll be posting when ready.
Also, some more mission ideas are still floating around in my head!  :D

Thanks again,

First off, thanks for adding to the pool of missions we have to choose from!

A question:

Does this have a briefing that is applicable to this mission? Or, said another way, have you figured out how to add briefings to new missions so that we don't have to read another briefing from another mission that has nothing to do with the one at hand?

Also, have you figured out how to add new splash screens, or does this new one use a "stock" splash screen?

Title: Re: Hi everyone, new missions!
Post by: Kyth on November 08, 2010, 08:01:42 AM
Hi Stig,

Yes indeed, the mission has its own briefing ;

The splash screen is the nice screenshot seen above, in the first post.

Please give this mission a try!  :)

This thread is still confusing me mightily.   ??? ??? ???

From the beginning now: HOW do I unpack this?

Quote
Create new mission” -> “Unpack”.

Where is this done? In the mission editor? Or if not that way, where exactly do you put the files?

In the read me, the reference to user_camp.engcfg file is very unclear. I must have a half dozen of these files floating around in the folders. Which one is it, in which complete file path?

That's: "...\Steel Fury - Kharkov 1942\bin\rel\shell.exe" root\programs\newmis.program

Hi Stig, Lockie,

I assume you're referring to my mission?
There's nothing to unpack, just extract my .rar file to the MODS folder, and activate it using JSGME.
The user_camp.engcfg file is here:

(http://lh3.ggpht.com/_Hbtk24rNEPw/TMmqbW4MdAI/AAAAAAAAABo/fP6k42H9ERY/s800/usercamp.jpg)

Add the new line to user_camp.engcfg, and you're good to go, :)

Title: Re: Hi everyone, new missions!
Post by: Stig on November 09, 2010, 10:55:22 PM
I suppose my confusion stems from the fact that this is a standalone mission, not a campaign.

Eventually, won't it become desirable to have separate lists of missions and campaigns that are groups of missions?

==================================
I've successfully unpacked the mission (I think) but in the briefing I see only three question marks "???"
And I don't see that excellent screen shot anywhere in the menus. I suppose I'm still missing something here...

Title: Re: Hi everyone, new missions!
Post by: Kyth on November 10, 2010, 08:50:55 AM
Hi Stig,

You didn't tell me whether you played the mission? Is it okay?  :)

That's the most important part...

If that part is okay, then, let's go over the 'user_camp.engcfg' thing again:

New_KY_01, txt_mc_mymission_1, 1, 0, Back_KY01.tga, txt_cit_02, 20, txt_history_tky_1, hist_map_teach, levels\levels\cm_users\New_KY_01.level;

Copy the line above and paste it after the last entry in 'user_camp.engcfg'.
As some of you may realise, it's actually some kind of 'csv' file. Don't leave out any commas from that line!

Hope this helps! :-\

Hi Stig (and everyone else),

Are you comfortable with moving folders and files?

This little 'tree' below should make things a little clearer, which files go where:

 <Steel Fury main folder>\data\k42\loc_rus\

 |                       |                          |                    |

 |                       |                          |
 LEVELS\                 M04_Bereka\                backs\
 |                       New_KY_01_lightmap.raw     Back_KY_01.tga
 |

 New_KY_01.level         |                          Weather_Kyth.engcfg
                         |
                         cm_users\
                         New_KY_01_script.engscr

I don't understand why is it so complicated just to add 2 lines of text to a sub folder???Kyth your explanations were quite clear.

I have your mission unpacked in datapack so I can apply some modifications to it ;D.I ll keep your original( and finally made it amission successful after the 4th attempt.The trick is in the timing; if you stay too long at the blocking point mopping up the infantry then you move too late to the village and cannto prevent the Soviets from destroying your trucks and or crossing the river.I am now leaving the mop up to other tanks and I rush towards the village to flank the Bolshevicks.) and I will simply make a new version with mid to late war tanks while keeping your script and mission goals intact.I love the Panther... ;)

Kyth; make more and don't be afraid that your missions won't be liked.You have the touch  to make them good I can tell!

Cheers

Good work Kyth .Keep making them Man you have willing customers :)

Hi Frinik (and everyone who is interested),

Actually the darkness and cover help the little PzIII's.
But you'll also need to watch out for enemy light tanks and infantry, which could land a lucky hit at close range!

Try replaying the mission, you'll find that it plays out slightly differently each time.

Thanks,

Hi Kyth you 3rd mission is a toughie all right!I love it because it packs a good tank battle and the element of surprise.

You seem to have an affinity for gloomy skies and rainy, blustery weather.... The sun seldom shines long on your missions.... ;D

Taking out the fast moving column is not too difficult.I destroyed 8 tanks in 5 minutes the first time I tried it.But you have to carefully manage your Panzergr. 39/75 otherwise you run out of it come the second wave and trying to kill KVs with sprengsgranate is akin to hunting a tiger with a 22 calibre rifle.....

Very well done! A two-stage mission.However playing it 6 times I found that:

your AI wingmen don't protect you. 3 times I was destroyed from behind by a Soviet tank sneaking up on me or flanking me while I was busy repelling frontal attacks while my wingmen stood by and acted only after my tank was on fire.

Did you consider adding some stugs III C/D to your missions? I feel they are better than the Panzer IVF1and provide good anti tank support.

 Playing your mission 6 times trying out different positions has shown that no matter how I do it 2 things happen:

1) I run out of AT shells because I have to do most of the work myself and the 50 mm shells don't pack enough punch against heavy KVs or even the tough Mark IIs and IIIs unless you're within 3 to 400 metres.

2) I can't rely on my Zug because either they get killed early in the mission or else they are too passive..

To increase the friendly AI responsiveness I am giving them the full 100 experience factor in the ME.I am also considering substituting 3 stugs III C/D for 3 of the Pz IVs.I .I am also considering changing the Leihgesch. 105 to Flak 88 guns to bolster the village defence.

I'll test your mission again with those changes and see how it goes.My best score was 12 tanks destroyed ( what I did was to meet the second wave head on on top of the hill instead of waiting for them by the village )and despite that the Reds overran our position...Mind you; I always play with the enemy AI set at max both in numbers and experience...

BTW have you been able to win your mission???? ???

Regards

Kyth between mission 1 and 3 I am sure which one is the best.You have the knack!!!!

Hi Frinik,

Don't give up just yet! I must assure you, it is winnable (at level 5)  :-\

I think I see the problem... you're facing the KV-1's and T-34's head-on.  In the little Panzer III? ...Not advisable...

Images of 'Custer's Last Stand' come to mind  ;D

My suggestion is, high-tail it over to the 2nd ambush position and take cover there (your platoon also). By 'cover', I mean one of the enemy wrecks, I assume you finished off the 1st wave without a problem. When facing down a KV-1, it's always a good idea to have a wreck between yourself and their 76.2mm. Preferably a Matilda  ;)

Remember, you want to do to the 2nd wave what you did to the 1st one!

Not to put too fine a point to it, here's all the stale old advice on 'tanktics':

- Try for side shots, don't use up ammo on frontal armour;
- The Valentines and Matildas are tough, but armed with pop-guns. They're secondary targets...
- Use HE ammo to immobilize & demoralize;
- Group tactics are key... Go where the other platoons go, time your actions with them, shoot when they shoot...
- :=Important=: ...Listen to the advice coming over the 'radio'. The old blowhard gives useful tips...

Anyway, glad to hear you're enjoying the mission. About the weather, don't worry, it'll change soon!

Regards,

Hi Kyth!

No way I am going to play it at level 5!!!! 8)

I know the Panzer III is lightly armoured and the effective range of it's 50mm is 500 metres and less( I have taken out T34s at 900 metres with it though).I tried the head on approach as I knew those tanks would be coming out of the woods and it almost worked I blasted 4 in 5 minutes.The problem is that the other surviving German tanks did not follow me nor did they provide me with cover fire

I tried staying in the village and got killed by a flanking T34.The second time a lucky shot disabled my gun.

I am not giving up I am going to try all positions until I WIN!

Don't underestimate the Mathildas and Mark IIs; their 45mms can damage your sights, disable your gun or kill your commander.The Panzer III is vulnerable to one of their shots at close range particularly on the sides and rear and even the front armour is not that thick.

Cheers

 :)

Hello again!
Here's the 4th mission in the series, following the events in mission 3:

Kyth Mission 4

The enemy is planning another of their pre-dawn attacks. Your kampfgruppe's task is to launch a pre-dawn attack on the pre-dawn attackers!
Just don't let them pre-empt your pre-emptive strike...

(http://lh3.ggpht.com/_Hbtk24rNEPw/TQ18ALbxCWI/AAAAAAAAAFY/MkFdTWDiIpo/s800/shot_2010_11_27_22_39_51_0002.jpg)

Please download the mission here:

http://www.4shared.com/file/FORxPxHZ/KythMission04.html (http://www.4shared.com/file/FORxPxHZ/KythMission04.html)

And, add in this extra line to the 'user_camp.engcfg' file:

New_KY_04, txt_mc_mymission_4, 1, 0, Back_KY04.tga, txt_cit_02, 20, txt_history_tky_1, hist_map_teach, levels\levels\cm_users\New_KY_04.level;

Careful with this one, there's a lot of maneuvering to be done!

Hi Kyth! Yeah a new mission!I finally mastered the last one after 9 attempts.My Panzer III got badly conked but 11 Sov tanks destroyed and 59 infantrymen zapped.Looking forward to playing this one( just downloaded it!How come you're using a French download site?)

Ther' s a guy on tanksim  HQ who wants to buy SF but Amazon is asking $55.60 for a copy!!!!Talk about extortion....

Do you know an alternative where he could buy it at a reasonable price?

Cheers

Hi Frinik,

Gamers Gate has Steel Fury available for digital download, at $19.95.

I assume you aced the mission at level 10!  ;)
What tactics / strategy did you use?

I had no clue about the download site! Anyway, it's reliable and user-friendly. The mission-building videos by Fabianfred are hosted there, so that's where I got the idea to use them. If you decide to post your missions, that's a good place,

Hi Kyth!

Well after butting my head too many times and getting killed by assuming my natural offensive-minded posture I wisely decided to stay behind and let my fellow Panzer III deal with the brunt of the first Soviet attack. I then used a burning T34 as a cover to deal with the second wave.I used my HE against the first wave and kept my Pzgr 39 to cope with the KVs.I tried, based on experience, aiming for the fuel tanks ( to the rear of tank low just above the tracks). I only killed 8 tanks( slow day for me) including 3Kvs but finally the entire Sov attack was repelled with the enemy leaving all their tanks wrecked and only a few infantrymen who managed to flee the battleground.Only one Panzer III was left and mine, both damaged with  sights and my loader killed.All the At guns were gone except for one Pak38.It was a skin-thin victory but the Mission Successful message indicated MIssion Accomplished!Good solid mission with lots of manoeuvring, positioning, tactics and shooting skills required.Perfect training mission for future panzer crews!!!!

Played your mission 04 twice. First time, I took out 6 BT5s but then my wife started to talk to me and I was distracted for 2 minutes which was enough to get myself killed by another BT5.... >:(

Second time, I destroyed 3 BTs and one 76 mm but the mist( nice twist of yours ;D) prevented me from spotting the other 76mm AT ( as I said before I avoid looking at the in-game map once the mission has started to give more realism to the missions.) near the edge of the woods and my Panzer III was blown up by a flank shot which sent my crew ablaze and running wildy about( this is a gruesome but very realistic feature of the game which I like.).

Will go for 3 rd try tonight 8).Again mist and overcast skies and precious little light on the battlefiled which makes your mission all the more tough. Kyth.I'll bet you your favourite time of the year must be November or March!!!!!

Anyway very good mission

BTW where t do you get the name Potatopov?A joke? I believe the village name is Zelevnyii Gay or something like that....

Thanks for the info but Hemisent, the guy whom I was trying to help, decided to go for the Amazon rip-off.He said that he lives in the boonies and his limited download rate does not allow him to use digital downloads....Bummer.

He blames both you and I for his purchase as he said my beating the drums for SF and your missions have created an unbeatable addiction.

Keep-up the goodwork

Regards

Please drop a line!

Hi Kyth!I definitely wouldn't call your missions too easy.If people think so let them play them at level 10 on the diffuclty slider.I think they offer a good balance of tactics and fighting skills.My only criticism would be to add to the variety of tanks on the German side, add Panzejäger, stugs, panzer II and may be another player tank than the Panzer III?

I like the weather that you use, gloomy, rainy, overcast perfect atmosphere for gritty, hard fought sluggers. ;)

My advice you're good at making them .Keep them coming!

Best

Frinik

Not questions, but perhaps comments and suggestions...

1) None of the missions has anything like a briefing. Just "???" And judging from the comments above, #3 seems to cry out for a custom briefing!  Do you plan to write briefings or... wait for it... create a tutorial on how one amends/adds mission briefings to scenarios :D ?

2) You've got 4 missions now, and seemingly more to follow! Great! Now they begin to scream to be their own little mini-campaign. So again, the questions on how to edit the files and .engcfg files to get them out of the "User Made Mission" section of the interface and into a "Kyth's Missions" (or perhaps something with a different title...) section.

Hi Stig,

Now that's a little baffling, all the missions have a short writeup, useful information and a list of objectives in the briefing screen...

You were able to complete the missions without all that useful stuff??  :o

I know Mission 3 is a tough one, mainly because of the enemy hordes.  ;D

If you don't get the briefing as shown below, that could be a problem,

Yes, PLEASE DO develop campaigns for the less-than-ueber tank variants.

You can learn a lot more about tactics and survival in an early-war tank than you can with one of those impervious Tigers and Panthers that the gotta-wins have to have.

Stig;I take exception to your Gotta-win comment about those of us who happen to like the Panther for example.I am not a gotta-win but I happen to like the Panther ausf D or G.It's my favourite tank with all the right qualities, solid armour, powerful gun , well balanced offensive and defensive qualities and mobility as well. In the name of survival and learning tactics am I supposed to be a masochist and play in a Panzer IIC and flog myself on the back as well? Well, no! I  don't have a fixation on the überpanzers I would actually trade a Tiger I or II for a Panther any day and a JS2 or T34/85 for a Panzer IV G or H or a Jagdpanzer IV L48 or L70 for that matter.Let's avoid generalisations and stereotyping shall we?Just because you love playing early war tanks does not mean I am entitled to call you a piss-pot lover. Well I ' d rather fight with a Panther than a Panzer III, with an MG42 rather than a bow and arrow and yes I'd rather race with a Porsche 911 Carrera than a Toyota...

Funny cause I had the same argument with a guy on the subsim forum, a condescending smurf full of himself who came to lecture us poor dumb simmers on the peril of liking and wanting to play überpanzers and the joy of driving a Mathilda or a T60 for the sake of " educating sim players"::).This is how he put it......Shiiiit!

I educated him on the virtues of democracy, freedom of choice and humility( I doubt he understood the last part..)

Sorry Stig don't mean to castigate you or even put you in the same category just making a point. :)

Sorry Stig don't mean to castigate you or even put you in the same category just making a point. :)

I don't take exception to a bit of discussion at all, frinik... cheers.

I guess, said another way, is I feel that sim fans of all types, tend to go for the "most effective" examples rather than the "most representative" examples. And, it's no coincidence that the more effective examples of any kind of weaponry, be they aircraft, tanks, whatever... are the late war "ueber" models. Often, these were available in limited quantity, or were faced with overwhelming numbers or other conditions (low fuel, limited weapon loadouts, etc.) that rendered even their ueberness useless. Of course, the sim fans don't link those factors together, so they get to go rampaging about in "tank duels" and "even odds" matchups with other players with their super-whatever, laying waste to all in their path.  ::)

Not necessarily saying you must be in that category if you like Panthers... I suppose only YOU know that for yourself, deep down. But, this happens a LOT in simland, and I'm the type of guy who likes to get a good history lesson with my sim: so I tend to look for the "average matchup" given a specific time period or battle zone. And I'd tend to have a lot more respect for a guy who can kick @ss in a Panzer IV short barrel during the Stalingrad era than a guy recreating Wittmann's famous stand for the umpteenth time.

But, that's just one guy's opinion! Cheers!

Count me in as long as the beer is served out of keg carried by a Panther ausf.G ...Hip!

BTW  why is the Panther considered a super tank????It's got a 75 mm gun, smaller in calibre than the Sherman's , T34/76  and T34/85 m guns( none of these was ever called a super tank)????It's much less armoured than either Tiger tank models or even than the JS2 and certainly no more than the KV1 or KV2.It carries less shells than the Tiger I ausf. H and less powerful optics than the Panzer VI ausf. B.So???So my argument is in what is it exactly a super tank????The kill ratio for Panthers ( i.e all Panthers lost including those destroyed by their own crews or damaged and recovered by the enemy) is just 2.2 for every Panther lost compared to 6.1 to 1 for the Tiger I and 10.6 for the Tiger II.True enough once you discard the Panthers lost to self destruction and only includes those actually lost in combat the ratio goes up to 3.4 to 1.Still it may reflect as much the qualities of its crews as the qualities of the tank itself.

As for the history lesson, you can learn as much driving and fighting in a Panther, at a time when Germany was on the retreat , as you can fighhting in a Panzer IV F1.Because the Panzer IV F1 crews at least had in their days the luxury of Luftwaffe support or air supremacy, a well supplied army, no fear of constant air strikes.
Panthere crews had to fight and survive with the odds staked heavily against them. They had to learn new tactics.

Just a series of good examples; the Tigers organised in Schwere Panzer Abteilungen ( Heavy Armour Sections or Platoons) and used as fire brigades to hunt and destroy Soviet armour that would penetrate German defensive lines especially after Stalingrad, or the camo used by German tanks in 1944-45 in order to make their tanks blend better in the landscape, avoiding detection by allied aircrafts and use concealent to ambush superior numbers of enemy armour. The heavy or super tanks if you prefer were simply alogical development of a German army on the defensive and increasingly facing superior numbers of armour and infantry on all fronts.By creating heavily armoured tanks with powerful guns and using superior German optics to strike at the masses of enemy armour from long distances which would keep them be immune and out of range of normal tanks guns they hoped to negate numerical superiority and the impossibility for Germany to match Allies and Soviets in tank output.It worked for while until the Allies gained air supremacy which made heavy armour vulnerable to air strikes and denied the Germans battlefield superiority.But in the East where the Soviet never had air supremacy not even in 1945 it worked well as the staggering losses the Soviets suffered( an average of 2000 tanks and SPGs lost every month in 1943, 1994 , 1945) attest( combined with poor tactics by Soviet generals and commanders, disregard for losses and inferior optics and training for their crews).

The T34/85, Panther and Tigers were the forerunners of what are now the Main Battle Tank s(MBTs) like the Leopard A6, Abrams A1A2, Challenger, Leclerc, T90 etc with extra mobility, firepower and armour of course due to technological progress.Check videos of the Leopard A6 on youtube and it's got everything the Panther had in it's days, solid armour, speed and a powerful gun and outstanding optics.

Kyth I have a problme with your mission 7.I can't make it work! In the user missions menu instead of your standard off-the-wall mission  ;)title t I get the text_mission 07 one and the mission crashes with the 001 screen.I checked and I have the line required in the user_camp folder and nothing is missing I compared it with your other mission lines and it' s complete.The mission folder is unpacked into the MODs folder and the mission is properly enabled into the JSMGE. I tried installing it into another game installation and still the same problem. I downloaded again your file thinking my download was possibly faulty,  re-installed everything and still the same problem? It seems that something is missing but no idea what  Has anybody else reported the same problem? I am baffled!

Hi,

Not sure what went wrong, my first guess is the user_camp file.

The missions are supposed to be listed as follows:

Quote
   New_KY_01, txt_mc_mymission_1, 1, 0, Back_KY01.tga, txt_cit_02, 20, txt_history_tky_1, hist_map_teach, levels\levels\cm_users\New_KY_01.level;
   New_KY_02, txt_mc_mymission_2, 1, 0, Back_KY02.tga, txt_cit_02, 20, txt_history_tky_1, hist_map_teach, levels\levels\cm_users\New_KY_02.level;
   New_KY_03, txt_mc_mymission_3, 1, 0, Back_KY03.tga, txt_cit_02, 20, txt_history_tky_1, hist_map_teach, levels\levels\cm_users\New_KY_03.level;
   New_KY_04, txt_mc_mymission_4, 1, 0, Back_KY04.tga, txt_cit_02, 20, txt_history_tky_1, hist_map_teach, levels\levels\cm_users\New_KY_04.level;
   New_KY_05, txt_mc_mymission_5, 1, 0, Back_KY05.tga, txt_cit_02, 20, txt_history_tky_1, hist_map_teach, levels\levels\cm_users\New_KY_05.level;
   New_KY_06, txt_mc_mymission_6, 1, 0, Back_KY06.tga, txt_cit_02, 20, txt_history_tky_1, hist_map_teach, levels\levels\cm_users\New_KY_06.level;
   New_KY_07, txt_mc_mymission_7, 1, 0, Back_KY07.tga, txt_cit_02, 20, txt_history_tky_1, hist_map_teach, levels\levels\cm_users\New_KY_07.level;

If it helps, you could copy and paste the above into the user_camp.engcfg file,

Hope this helps!

Hi Frinik,

Hope things work out!

As a last resort, you might want to try a fresh installation, then activating the mods all over again.

Hi everyone,

I've discovered a rather bad bug relating to Mission 6 ("Battle of the Flea-bitten Village"). No, they're not fleas, it's regarding the Panzergrenadiers. Those guys may not budge from their starting positions! Since one of the mission objectives is to keep them alive, this makes the mission unexpectedly easy!!  :(

I discovered this when trying out a fresh install of SF - it turns out I've fixed this bug before, then forgot all about it, it's to do with the 'apcg_places.engcfg' file, and the fix can be downloaded here:

http://www.4shared.com/file/_w2YamU4/Sk250c10fix.html (http://www.4shared.com/file/_w2YamU4/Sk250c10fix.html)

Some explanation about what was fixed; shown below is the 'apcg_places' file, as in SPM1.4 and SPM1.5.

Quote
   wp_driver,    0x99,   0.10, driver, , driver, sig_driver, door,
         s_driver, s_driver_out,  p_driver, p_driver_out, s_driver_exit, sdkfz_driver, %ROLE_DRIVER%;

         s_gunner, s_gunner_out,  p_gunner, p_gunner_out, s_pass_exit, sdkfz_gunner, %ROLE_GUNNER%;

//         s_pass9, s_pass9_out,  p_pass9, p_pass9_out, s_pass_exit, sdkfz_pass, %ROLE_PASSENGER%;

All those passenger places have been commented out!

What happens next:
- Grenadier Command unit is unable to mount up in their Sk251/10
- Other grenadier squads wait for the the command unit to mount up and go
- Of course, that never happens, so they stay put and sit out the entire mission!

So it's a good idea to take out the '//' from the Passenger lines.

By the way, I've tried out the Sk251/10 single mission, and this fix doesn't affect the playability, so I wonder why they mucked around with it??

Bad bug!Badness! Get the fix.
http://www.4shared.com/file/_w2YamU4/Sk250c10fix.html (http://www.4shared.com/file/_w2YamU4/Sk250c10fix.html)

And you can play the mission with the required level of difficulty  ;)

(edit)

I've updated the 'KythMission06' file to include this fix. Good luck!

I don´t get it. I just can´t find the 'user_camp.engcfg' file.
Searched everywhere in my Pc.

In C:\Programme\Games\Steel Fury - Kharkov 1942\data\k42\loc_rus\levels\LEVELS\camp i only can find a
main_camp.engcfg  and a  camp_list.engcfg. That´s it.
Please help :-\

Hi,

The 'user_camp.engcfg' and the 'user_camp_list.engcfg' files only appear with your first user-created mission  :)

It's possible you don't have any user_camp.engcfg file! In that case, please rename my 2 backup files, 'user_camp_list.txt' and 'user_camp.txt', to 'user_camp_list.engcfg'  and 'user_camp.engcfg'.

I added the lines as you said, now it looks like this:

//Graviteam mission create system ver. 0.1

user1()
{
   missiontest, missiontest, 1, 0, back_t01.tga, txt_cit_01, 30, txt_hist_intro, hist_map_teach, levels\levels\cm_users\missiontest.level;

Greetings!

As promised here's a tough one for you!

Kyth Mission 8

Noisy battles break out all along the river! You are there to ensure that tactical skill and good shooting, keep the enemy well and truly clobbered.

(https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_Hbtk24rNEPw/TXtTbRLZb_I/AAAAAAAAAP4/xtZGUz16DfI/s800/shot_2011_03_05_17_53_19_0001.jpg)

Please download the mission here:
http://www.4shared.com/file/nY8_P1Fs/KythMission08.html (http://www.4shared.com/file/nY8_P1Fs/KythMission08.html)

And add in this extra line to the 'user_camp.engcfg' file:
New_KY_08, txt_mc_mymission_8, 1, 0, Back_KY08.tga, txt_cit_02, 20, txt_history_tky_1, hist_map_teach, levels\levels\cm_users\New_KY_08.level;

Hint: Set your formation to 'none' when crossing the river, you will need every tank you have!

Good luck!

I'd recommend level 5,

Title: Re: Hi everyone, new missions!
Post by: lockie on March 12, 2011, 10:35:17 PM
As turned it out "5" balance was too complicated for me. He-he, 9 soviet tanks including three T-34 against 6 weakness PzIII+1PzIV... I've lost all my tanks right immediately :)
"2" is normal, but I don't see anything at the village:( U should've been added some flares as my point.

Title: Re: Hi everyone, new missions!

This is a situation where they out-ran their artillery support  ;)

By the way, the lighting is not as dark as Mission 2, you still have a chance to spot and shoot targets if they're near enough,

  Hi Kyth, mission 8 installed, played and almost won!

Good mission, very atmospheric with the spectacular sunrise. I survived the onslaught of Soviet armour just to have the gun damaged curse falling upon me. Nevertheless after taking out 3 tanks I decided to push on with my 2 surviving  Panzer III, we forded the river and went on to take to the strong Soviet defences. Machine gunned 2 76 mm guns and their ctrews and managed to crush a third one before dying in a blaze of glory killed by infantry grenades .My 2 wingmen had , of course, managed to get themselves killed by the other guns.My verdict you had no reasons to worry mission 7 in my opinion was more difficult. Planning to do ti again and this time win!

Bravo My man.

For mission 8 and 9 could you please use the new maps? that would be nice!

Cheers ;)

Title: Re: Hi everyone, new missions!
Post by: Kyth on March 14, 2011, 02:38:21 AM
Hi Frinik,

Not revealing too much, but there's one more battle in the mission, after the defenses are captured  :o

Be prepared!  ;)

Title: Re: Hi everyone, new missions!
Post by: Kyth on March 14, 2011, 02:57:40 AM
One more tip that came to mind,
the infantry are entrenched or hiding in the tree lines, so it's a good idea to stay out of 'grenade range' and blast away  :)

Title: Re: Hi everyone, new missions!
Post by: frinik on March 14, 2011, 04:09:14 AM
Hy Kyth, the reason I took on the infantry with my machine-gun is that my gun was damaged during the battle with the Sov tanks, one surviving Valentine took a lucky shot at me....Then after my 2 wingmen got themselves killed by the Soviet PaKs and as I was running out of bullet I had no choice but to use my tank to ram and destroy the remaining  guns and crews. Anyway I wanted to have my pic in Signal.... I died a Hero of Vaterland! ;)

Title: Re: Hi everyone, new missions!
Post by: Kyth on March 14, 2011, 08:18:18 AM
Okay but a live one is preferred  ;D

Sorry about the gun-damage, I get agitated with that quite often,  :(

Title: Re: Hi everyone, new missions!
Post by: frinik on March 14, 2011, 01:55:07 PM
  Anyway I played your mission at the hardest level( I shall never play any mission at at a level below 10 8). However I have to admit that I drive the tank in automatic and use the more powerful shell feature. That ain 't cheating is it? ???

Title: Re: Hi everyone, new missions!
Post by: Kyth on March 14, 2011, 02:14:42 PM
Not at all!

I happen to use the 'auto track-repair' option  :)

Title: Re: Hi everyone, new missions!
Post by: frinik on March 18, 2011, 08:49:36 AM

Grrr speaking of Kyth's mission 8 it ought to be called the Kyth of death! :(

After having my gun disabled twice, my third try it was my engine that was disabled again unable to complete the mission.4th attempt both gunner and driver killed at the onset down to three killed while taking on the At guns....

I ain't giving up.... 8)

Title: Re: Hi everyone, new missions!
Post by: Kyth on March 18, 2011, 08:57:57 AM
 ;D

Say, about the engine damage, I remember completing the mission once by driving the tank in reverse  ;)

A little slower than I'd prefer, and I had to rely on my 'wingmen' to deal with the last bit,

I have to admit, driving backwards up the hills was kind of a nightmare  :D

Title: Re: Hi everyone, new missions!
Post by: frinik on March 18, 2011, 09:00:57 AM

Yeah I have done that in the past with a Tiger or Panzer IV.However couldn't do it because my transmission was damaged as well so the tank would barely lurch forward a bit and then stop....

I am the helpless victim of hostile AI  :'(

In this armoured clash, you shall be deciding the outcome; will good shooting win the day, or will it be your Last Stand ...?

 Thanks for ther new mission Kyth!Is it my imagination or is the player tank a Panzer IVF2 as per your pic? Unless it´s only a companion tank?

 Has anybody played  Graviteam´s Achtung Panzer /Kharkov Front Roads 1943?I am curious because apparently the game engine is much improved over SF´s and will be used for4 both Steel Armour Blaze of War and the next WWII sim based on Kharkov August 1943. So curious to know if the improvement is significant.

Cheers

  Hi Kyth! I played mission number 9 and WOW! There's smile on my face a huge tank battle and I am driving a Panzer IVF2!

I counted no less than 46 Soviet tanks on the map!That's my kind of mission; a real slugger with explosions, smoke, guns barking and Mgs firing everywhere. Of course we were totally overwhelmed by the onrush of Bolschevik armour despite a glorious and heroic stand! I lost my entire zug despite the fact that we destroyed no less than 22 tanks and damaging another 8. I  was the last to go killed  - OH Infamy! - by a T-60 which rendered my gun useless and then turned my PzIV into Emmenthaler cheese....Still, I took 7 enemy tanks with me to Walhalla....

I was happy to see some Stugs, they did well compared to the Panzer IIIs which did not score a single kills. Excellent mission but at the ratio I play it(  difficulty slider to the max ) I 'll be lucky to ever win it. ???

Thanks ! Now back to counting Pansheep IIIs ;D

Otherwise I don't see any other significant aniversay that early.

Just to drown the Spam.... ;D

Mission Number 9 Report

Kyth on my third attempt I finally achieved Mission Successful! On my seocnd attempt I posted my tank at the edge of the forest down Hill170 and managed to inflict heavy casualties on the main Soviet attack before being killed by a T-34 that outflanked me and blew me up before I had a chance to send him by Lenin's side on a red cloud in Soviet Workers and Peasants Heaven....

On my third attempt I  followed the same tactic but this time I concealed myself better in the forest.From my position I used Spr.Gr 34 to wreak havoc on the light tanks leading the main attack.I destroyed or disabled 4 of them - at 900 metres or more - which created a block for the incoming T-34s, Valentines, Mathildas and KVs that followed.That slowed down the attack and allowed my defence line on the hill to rain down a hail of steel on the column.I joined in with PzGr 39/75 and in 16 minutes the entire Soviet force was anihilated.I just whirled my Panzer IV around came out the woods and helped my second line of defence deal with what was left of the secondary Soviet attack.Killed 2 KVs and one T-34 and the battle came to an end.All Soviet tanks were still; burning or smoking or simply abandoned with hatches open.The Mission Successful message came on screen.I toured the battlefield ; only 2 tanks were left on my own side; a badly battered Stugs with 16 shell impacts and 2 dead crew members and a Panzer IVF1 with tracks disabled and also minus 2 crew members .All others were destroyed or abandoned.My own tank was hit 5 times and my machine gunner was killed.I personally destroyed 10 tanks including 4 T-34 and 2 KV-1.The scene was as bleak and grim as one of my own battles

Tough battle Kyth! Well done!!!!!  Just a couple of points tough for future missions.The Panzer III with 37 mm guns are just no match for most Soviet tanks.The 50 mm Kwk L60 is much better.Stugs are a great addition to your missions( I have been begging for them).They are tougher to kill and can really give you the extra firepower you need to cope with masses of enemy armour.Keep them! Why not include

Love playing the Panzer IV.

PLease note that I did it without the benefit ogf any of the sandals and running shoes so kindly advertised by our spammers ;)

Yeah we could Call the 10-mission series The 10 Labours of  Herr Ky(th)les.

Jokes aside , really well done Kyth your production is really amazing! Not to mention that your missions were well crafted and inventive and the titles very original ( Hellmann, Tomatovka and Lomo all in one mission what a sandwich). ;D

 Hi Kyth! I realise my queston s off topic but I didn't want to start a new thread.Do you have the Tigwer SS fix for Beta 1.5? Can't find it on the Avia forum.

BTW what's special about the Tiger SS model other than its distinctive camo?

Thanks

You mean the Beta Fix for SPM 1.5?
There's an alternative download link from Godzilla:

http://www.mediafire.com/?q38nkzaginphq (http://www.mediafire.com/?q38nkzaginphq)

It appears to include a replacement for the TigerSS armour map.
As far as I can see, the only special thing about the Tiger SS is the unbearable lemon-yellow colour  :(

  Thanks but I am not sure it's the one.Every time I try to play that tank I get the white 001 screen.I suspect some file is missing which why the Tiger SS crashes my game. It seems to me thtat Stone 2009 made a specific just for the Tiger SS????

Post by: POW on April 06, 2011, 07:52:49 PM
WOW... i just played the first mission and it was GREAT (but i got killed LOL)

Anyway... you should pack all the missions and make some corrections

To make the missions work i had to do this:

Unrar all the files to a temporary folder. Starting with number 1 and following the numbers (overwriting the old ones)

Renamed the file from your last mission located in  the  camp folder "user_camp.text" to "user_camp.engcfg"

Copied all the files to my Steel Fury Folder.

Edited the file "camp_list.engcfg" located in the camp folder and added the following line at the end:

camp\user_camp.engcfg, user1,          txt_cm_camp_user,   false, img_user4;

I use a fresh install patched to SP 1.5. I have also installed the Prokhorovka map and campaing and my "camp_list.engcfg" looks this way:

//ñïèñîê êàìïàíèé
camp_list()
{

   //ôàéë, áëîê, íàçâàíèå+îïèñàíèå, êàìïàíèÿ, ñïðàéò êàðòèíêè

   camp\main_camp.engcfg, teach,          txt_cm_camp_teach,         false, img_t34;
   camp\main_camp.engcfg, single,          txt_cm_camp_single,        false, img_single;
   camp\main_camp.engcfg, rkka_1,               txt_cm_camp_rkka_1,          true,  img_t34;
   camp\main_camp.engcfg, rkka_2,               txt_cm_camp_rkka_2,          true,  img_mk2;
   camp\main_camp.engcfg, rkka_8,              txt_cm_camp_rkka_8,          true,  img_teach;
   camp\main_camp.engcfg, rkka_4,               txt_cm_camp_rkka_4,          true,  img_user9;
   camp\main_camp.engcfg, rkka_3,               txt_cm_camp_rkka_3,          true,  img_user2;
   camp\main_camp.engcfg, rkka_t60,       txt_cm_camp_rkka_t60,        true, ,;
        camp\main_camp.engcfg, rkka_5,               txt_cm_camp_rkka_5,          true, ,;
   camp\main_camp.engcfg, rkka_6,               txt_cm_camp_rkka_6,          true, ,;
        camp\main_camp.engcfg, rkka_7,               txt_cm_camp_rkka_7,          true, ,;
   camp\main_camp.engcfg, rkka_trophy,       txt_cm_camp_rkka_trophy,     false, ,;
   camp\main_camp.engcfg, werm_1,               txt_cm_camp_werm_1,          true,  img_pz4;
   camp\main_camp.engcfg, werm_2,               txt_cm_camp_werm_2,          true,  img_user10;
   camp\main_camp.engcfg, werm_3,               txt_cm_camp_werm_3,          true,  img_user1;
   camp\main_camp.engcfg, werm_new,           txt_cm_camp_werm_new,        true, ,;
   camp\main_camp.engcfg, werm_stug,      txt_cm_camp_werm_stug,       true, ,;
   camp\prokho_camp.engcfg, prokho,       txt_cm_camp_Prokho,        true, img_t34;
   camp\prokhower_camp.engcfg, prokhower,       txt_cm_camp_Prokho1,        true, img_pz4;
   camp\user_camp.engcfg, user1,          txt_cm_camp_user,   false, img_user4;
}

_vars() {}

It's was a pain to install it, since i'm a newbie and i don't knew how to add missions and campaings. I made this guide for newbies like me

GREAT WORK... Now go for the Ferdinand campaing  ;)

 :)

Hi POW,

Yes, that method will work fine. As an alternative, let me trot out my standard instructions, which I will probably add to my missions files:

Quote

The quickest way to install my missions is using 'JSGME' (Jonesoft Generic Mod Enabler), same as the installation of the Steel Panzer mod.
For example, Mission 1 is contained in the downloaded file, 'Kythmission01.rar'.

  • Extract the 'Kythmission01.rar' file to the 'MODS' folder. (I use WinRAR to do this)
  • The new 'mod' should show up in the 'available mods', and can be activated:
(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_Hbtk24rNEPw/TTEHFZw8q4I/AAAAAAAAAHs/qdwe_66H29w/s800/Howto.jpg)

  • The 'user_camp.engcfg' file can be found here:
(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_Hbtk24rNEPw/TMmqbW4MdAI/AAAAAAAAABo/fP6k42H9ERY/s800/usercamp.jpg)

Just add in an extra line at the bottom:

user1()
{
Alex_01, Alex_01, 1, 0, back_t01.tga, txt_cit_01, 30, txt_hist_intro, hist_map_teach, levels\levels\cm_users\Alex_01.level;
Alex_02, Alex_02, 1, 0, back_t01.tga, txt_cit_01, 30, txt_hist_intro, hist_map_teach, levels\levels\cm_users\Alex_02.level;
Alex_03, Alex_03, 1, 0, back_t01.tga, txt_cit_01, 30, txt_hist_intro, hist_map_teach, levels\levels\cm_users\Alex_03.level;
New_KY_01, txt_mc_mymission_1, 1, 0, Back_KY01.tga, txt_cit_02, 20, txt_history_tky_1, hist_map_teach, levels\levels\cm_users\New_KY_01.level;
} //end of user1

  • It's possible you don't have any user_camp.engcfg file! In that case, please rename my 2 backup files, 'user_camp_list.txt' and 'user_camp.txt', to 'user_camp_list.engcfg' and 'user_camp.engcfg'.

If you are comfortable with moving folders and files, the following 'tree' should give you an idea where all the files for each mission should be:

<Steel Fury main folder>\data\k42\loc_rus\

                         New_KY_01_zones.engcfg
                         New_KY_01_loc_data.text

Hope this helps!

Attention all Panzer troops!

Get ready for your next mission!

Kyth Mission 10
The recent counterattack has resulted in the encirclement of a Rather Large enemy force. However, they will require a lot of "convincing" to actually stay captured... Elements of 3rd Panzer (you again) are on the scene!

(https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_Hbtk24rNEPw/TaiFc_PO3OI/AAAAAAAAARw/dPF0TPuVLdo/s800/shot_2011_04_04_00_21_27_0003.jpg)

Please get the mission here!
http://www.4shared.com/file/CmZFJ6xG/KythMission10.html (http://www.4shared.com/file/CmZFJ6xG/KythMission10.html)

And, add this line to the 'user_camp.engcfg' file:
New_KY_10, txt_mc_mymission_10, 1, 0, Back_KY10.tga, txt_cit_02, 20, txt_history_tky_1, hist_map_teach, levels\levels\cm_users\New_KY_10.level;

Good luck, everyone!

 A Panzer IVF1 mission.Good stuff! Thank you Lord and Kyth for giving us our regular dose of tank action!

Sorry Kyth but in SF nobody gets captured, nobody surrenders.

On the Sukhoi forum they are trying to make a mod in which you actually take prisoners and the AI surrenders. We will need from that time on to stricly ensure thta the provisions of the Geneva Convention are adhered to.Those who violate it will be expelled from the forum 8)

Yes, sadly true, the "persuasion" will have to take a different form in the mission  ;D

Well, time to wrap things up! I'll be making and testing out a campaign compiled from all these bits and pieces. Keep a look out for it, everyone!
