Just downloaded and installed the game yesterday from Gamersgate.  I have version 5.81 (2283)  Do I need to install this patch or is it already updated.?   Also, I installed the hi-res pack...do I need the optional polygon pack? Thanks again

Yes, you need the May patch, the one included with GamersGate's installer is older (August 2013 as far as I remember). Polygon pack isn't needed, it is included with GG's installer. And as of the Hi-Res pack, you should put it above the patch and DLCs in the updater utility (see the wiki: Installing updates and modifications).
