What do you guys think of this....?

A "scout area" order applicable in the battle phase. Any squad that has an officer with binocs could scout for potential threats in a given area (mechanic would be similar to area fire albeit area would be larger), potentially finding hidden/entrenched AT guns and mortars. Think about it like likelihood of success = range*terrain*weather*spotting skill*time.  Not to make it OP of course, but you could spot an AT sitting at 300m out in the open. Chances of spotting an entrenched gun in the forest would be very low.

To make it more interesting, the order could be activated through platoon leader only, assuming he's the man/element that would normally scout/judge the terrain for the troops anyway.

I am certain there is already a spotting mechanic based on range, terrain, weather, experience, optics etc. There is absolutely no reason for it not being in the game. What you are suggesting is something akin spotting action from the hex based wargames, like the horrible Squad battles series from John Tiller.

Why would a platoon leader be the only man that would normally recon for the troops? Squad leaders are perfectly capable of such a feat, as well as any couple of soldiers, that a platoon or squad leader could send anywhere to check on suspicious objects or elements of terrain, as well as provide some form of security.

Of course there is a spotting mechanic in game already. However what if you want to investigate a particular area like a treeline over the field? It would be more of a "focus spotting here" button. Chances of success would grow (to a limit) over time.

Maybe there already is a mechanic where the squad leaders pick up binos when they are stationary and scan for targets automatically. The longer you leave them in place the more of a chance for them to find something. But I'm not aware of it.

Either way having an active scan button wouldn't mean the passive scanning is switched off. It would work in conjunction with it.

Why only platoon leaders? You're right squad leaders would normally do that too, but from a gameplay perspective you'd end up with too much micro. If you keep it to platoon leaders you're giving some options, but not too many. All of that is just theorizing though.
