Hello everyone,

I was fortunate enough to try this game without DLC, as I was able to experience the original dark night battles. After buying all DLC and updating, night battles are much brighter, apparently by player request.

I would love to buy this game and DLC for my friends, but I really want them to experience the original night battle darkness. How do you get the original "black hole" darkness back? Could it be a setting in a config somewhere?

Thank you.

There is an option to activate/deactivate the night battles:

Thanks for the reply, but I was referring to GTOS, and not GTMF or TW as in your link.

I've already enabled night battles. I'm talking about the standard darkness for night battles. In the version that I played a few weeks ago with no DLC, night battles (e.g. the first fight at Radgospnoye in the German Taranovka campaign) were pitch black. After downloading DLC and reupdating, the night battles wouldn't get as dark--you could see the terrain features.

I think I may be remembering it wrong--I may have bought the game and DLC all at once, but Steam b0rked the installation, so I was playing an old version of GTOS without knowing it. After reinstalling and updating properly, the pitch blackness was toned down with more light.

In this video, the map fades to black, completely obscuring terrain features, after the initial orders phase: https://youtu.be/xv2rhzNk_tM?t=297

In the most recent version of the game, it will only fade 75-85% of the way, allowing you to see pretty much all terrain features in a low-light condition. From what I've been able to gather, this was added in an update somewhere along the way because too many new players complained (most new players seem to start on the Taranovka campaign, like I did).

The original feeling of leading a few lost platoons in the darkened, howling, freezing, all-encompassing wasteland whose Leviathan expanse swallowed you whole was what made me fall in love with the game in the first place. And the tracers! The flares! The fire-lit explosions! What more needs to be said?

I also loved the fact that Graviteam had the balls to start you out on a night mission. Most other publishers would be far too afraid of scaring away new players to do that. But Graviteam's devotion to realism overrides all else, and I love that about them.

"Are night battles off-putting? Too bad, because historically, it was this dark at this time of night in this location for this campaign, so you're just going to have to deal with it."

In the current version, with the visible terrain features, the effect isn't quite the same, I must admit.  Sad

Does anyone know if it can be changed back via a setting in a config file somewhere?

I don't know how to help you. I have true night battles. When I create a true night battle, I need to change the weather to cloudy to hide the moon. I like this option: I can choose a true night battle or a night with moon.
In campaign, it's impossible to choose the weather. Maybe your weather is clear... And another day will be very dark?

I just tried night quick battles at Radgospnoye under all weather conditions. They all go to low light instead of pitch black--interestingly enough, the darkest I could get it was with weather condition Storm.

You know how this game doesn't have a traditional fog of war? You discover units, not terrain--from the very beginning of the tactical phase, you can scroll around the map to inspect terrain features. There are no geographical surprises--you can even scout out trenches and shell craters. This also means that the light conditions should be more or less uniform across the map (barring terrain rises and depressions, of course).

But I've noticed that in night battles, it's different...there's more light in a ~1km radius around the player, with the old pitch black light conditions on the borders of the circle. As the player moves around, this circle of light remains around the player, and the pitch black areas remain outside. The circle doesn't change shape or area.

This would seem to suggest that this is indeed a feature that Graviteam added as a begrudging compromise of realism for gameplay considerations: Some players were saying that they felt ripped off because they wanted to be able to see what they had spent their hard earned money on. The only problem is that there are some of us who actually loved the old night battles, lol. It was very much like a laser light show--it was the 40s version of a rave.  Grin

If Graviteam changed it, surely there must be a way to change it back...

You said you still had the old night battles. What version are you playing?

OK, that's odd...I tried a quick night battle with heavy fog on Shilovo and it went pitch black. I tried it again on Taranovka and I still got low-light.

I think I also discovered a new bug: sometimes "Heavy Fog" doesn't appear as an option in the weather menu for certain maps. Shilovo had the option, but it would disappear when changing the map in the menu to Taranovka, for instance. I had to start Taranovka with a different weather condition, then go back to the main menu, then go back to the weather menu to be able to select "Heavy Fog" for Taranovka.

So have low light battles only been enabled for Taranovka because that's usually what new players start on? I really hope there's a way to bring the darkness back to winter maps. Any ideas on what might be happening?

EDIT: It appears that under certain conditions, some maps go to low-light, some go to pitch black, and some go to a light level somewhere in between. This variation occurs despite having the exact same settings across maps. Could it be that the position of the sun, moon, and stars on certain dates were factored into the game in an update at some point? So at Taranovka, you'd always start with a full moon, and at Shilovo, you'd always start in darkness, as the game thinks you're playing on XX/XX/194X, so it loads the celestial data for that day IRL?

The Taranovka campaign used to start pitch black every time for me. Now it starts low-light every time, across profiles.

EDIT: I'll upload screenshots sometime soon when I have time. Thanks for your help so far!
