Steam problem - "Critical error 002"

I have a Gamersgate copy of the game. It runs fine.

I bought a second copy from Steam. When I install it (I have installed and uninstalled three times now) it opens the patch window. If I patch it or if I do not patch I get the same result:

"Critical error
002: An error has occurred while initializing objects

[ i_opgame:opgame -> i_steam:steam ]"

What am I doing wrong? Help, please.

And, yes, the game is worth owning two copies.
