This is gonna make a lot of people shake their heads. I can't figure out how to actualy drive the bloody tank. All i get is a face full of tactical map. I've tried the tutorial and for some reason it's not telling me what i need to know.
I got to wonder if i've gone stupid or somethin'.

Any help will be appreciated, even if you think i'm beyond hope and you tell me about it.

tx, Al.

Try this silverfox441 it's copy pasted from a post I made at SimHq for someone having a simular problem, should still work even with the new patch, but I think some of the icons I mentioned below have changed a little. But after you have done this a few times to get a taste I would highly suggest learning how to use the tactical maps, it really adds varity and makes SABoW much more enjoyable.

And yes you can jump into any battle straight away if you don't want to plan battle It's quick and dirty and won't give as much fun as learning the whole process, but here's how I do it.
On the Main GUI Screen
1). Just click "Start", at the next GUI screen select your campaign from the right and click the next turn button (looks like a clock)
2). At this GUI screen click the clock button again and the computer will make it moves, after that the icons on the maps will have what looks like gears around them.
3). Left click on your unit (Tank icon) that is close to an enemy icon to save time, (hopefully it's another armored unit). You will now see green highlighted squares on the map you can move the unit to. Right click on a green square next to an enemy unit.
4). Mouse over the enemy unit and a red crosshair will appear over it, now right click and the enemy icon will have a flame superimposed over it, click the clock icon button again.
5). The computer will show unit movements again, when its done put the mouse pointer back over the enemy unit that has the flame icon it and left click.
6). Now you should be at the Squad Deployment Screen, click the clock icon button again, that ends the turn, now click on the button that is next to the now greyed out clock icon button (clock face is gone so it's just a circle now) this is the moved to selected area button.
7). Hit your enter button and after a loading screen you should be sitting in your tank.
Like I said this is quick and dirty so if you die quickly it's not my fault  Tongue

Cheers

I'm really starting to enjoy this sim! But, the manual really needs improving like, i'm not sure how to actually "give " a target to the gunner and  how to get the range and what not. And why the tank refuses to cross a river sometimes? I gather it's because the river might be to deep at that particular spot? But it's my business if i wanna try, no? Or is it because i have to prep the tank for deep fording maybe?
Anyhow any help will be appreciated, tx in advance, Al.

Which tank are you trying to get range on?  M60 its a coincidence range finder.  Have commanders turret at the 12.  Hit the c or x key untill you get the optic with the fuzy picture.  Use scroll wheel (not sure which keys do it) until its not fuzzy.  The electro mechanical balistic computer will give the range.

T62....have no idea how or if you can give range to gunner.  Its pretty much the same fire control system as the old t34 except with a higher magnification.  You get strata line with a range scale.  Not sure what the exact measurement is but at 1000 meters a tanks heigth as measured by strata line is pretty close to right on (target depending).

River fording...ya if the ai feels its not safe they will not do it.  Its right more times than its wrong in my opinion.  I have stalled the t62 more than a few times in water.  But if you really want too hit f5 and take over drivers spot.

Giving gunner target is ctrl left click.....I have issues with it.  On another note ctrl right click gives driver a way point.

As a gunner on both tanks, you can ctrl-left click on a target you want your commander to range and he'll promptly give you the range a second after you put your aiming mark on said target.

Hummm, way point to driver: that works. Target to gunner (T-62) : nothing. Asking range to Commander: nothing.
So, it's ctrl left click mouse right? And oh, you were right about the fording thing, l took the driver's seat when he refused to cross a river, and promptly sank up to the turret. Oh well, i had to try...

Have you flipped a tank upside down yet?  Apparently Im a much better driver of tracked vehicles in real life than I am in SABOW.

Well, i was a pigeon not a zipper head (Canadian Forces parlance) but i did ride in a (then) brand new Leopard tank and i was very much impressed.
Still, i wonder what i'm doing wrong with this range to target thing.

T62......use range scale, middle mouse button to move the range line.  Put ^ on target, FIRE!  From gunner of course.  Commander...............ugh ya?HuhHuh?  As the most experienced (we hope) member of the crew, he should get the gunner on target, give his best guess on range.  Gunner *should* start from there, then correct fire into the target.

HOLD T. The gunner will traverse the turret as long as you hold.
