I just wanted to ask if the Pioniertrupp has some special abilities. I read in the paradoxplazza forum that the crew of a tank repaired the broken tank-tracks of their own so I thought that Pioniertrupps can repair too if they stand near a damaged vehicle/weapon.

And maybe special abilities for the Scouttrupps?

(sorry for my english. I am german  8) )

Special ability is 2 APCs per squad  Grin

There is no reason why pioneers or engineers would be particularly good at repairing vehicles. Indeed, the sapper seems to be least understood soldier in computer gaming. They have several capabilities that involve explosives (clearing and setting), mine warfare (clearing and laying), as well as constructing and destroying obstacles, building and destroying bridges, and sundry other tasks. They also can perform adequately as infantry, although generally they are too rare and valuable to use as mere cannon fodder, not that a good commander should use anybody as such in normal circumstances.

Engineers and pioneers are NOT mechanics. They do not build hospitals, they do not build barracks (well, not combat engineers, anyway), they do not build spawning points, they do not have mystical abilities with heavy weapons. So many games give them these bizarre attributes due to the ignorance of developers, that it is refreshing to see a game that does not have such bogus abilities built in.

It is to be hoped that Operation Star or some later Graviteam project in this series will flesh out the engineers a little, perhaps in clearing or laying mines, maybe dropping bridges and creating obstacles, and building bridges on the operational map. At least they are available as infantry now.

Do they perform any proper engineering function in the game that I am not aware of?

They should be able to do some basic wiring and lay small amount of mines as a road obstacle or blow small bridges on the scale and time of this game. Bridging by hand would take all night except with specialist vehicles and only the British had those.
