Ive read that some of you setup fields of fire in defensive situations and it allows you to have effective ambushes.  Ive been meaning to try it but usualy Ive got too many units to manage and dont do anything more elaborate then give the "hold fire" command.

I take that back, I had a Pak about to be overrun while it was shooting at infantry off on its flank that may have been a clearer target but werent nearly the threat of the charging Ivans. I set its field of fire, the gun pivoted smoothly, acquired the targets, and started pumping HE rounds into the oncoming Ivans.  They held until they ran out of HE rounds, then the Russians had their revenge.

I usually set my fire arcs out to a very great distance for my tanks and AT guns in the defense, but also I forbid them to fire on the infantry(control+i) until the enemy infantry advance gets to within approximately 200 meters of my defense line.If I have alot of units to set up(More than a company), I don't bother with covered arcs and special commands.Just facing, and then I sit back and wait and see how the battle developes, then I'll pause the game before setting arcs and issuing extra or special commands.Depending on which enemy units are the most immediate threat to the defending unit.
