Well it "seems" the August patch has put an end to the problem of the game barely going over 0.5 speed with all cores on. Need to test it again with more units on the map..but I was getting nearly 2.0 when sped up.

I notice some performance has dropped away with Shilovo but I think maybe it's because it's a summer map?

Number of units is also MUCh larger than average GTOS.  So ya... summer and more units..  But should be off set with the massively improved performance of how multicore is handled.  I have a pretty giant improvement due to that.  Can handle WAY more ai units on my machine.... I mean WAY more.  I now use unlimited battle size.... so far 100 percent playable on my 8 core.  Cheesy

With my i7-920@4 Ghz and 660 Ti card, I too have to report a good increase in performance since the patch. Very good!

Is it better to set "Use maximum cores" to "Maximum" or (if using a quadcore i7) to "4" -- or does it not make any difference?

In general GTOS runs great on my system, but it's still too prone to Critical Error 001 CTDs (which are just infuriating).  Anyway if there are any settings that are known to cause instability, I'd love to find out what they are.

With my i7-920 quad core, I have Graviteam Tactics set to use Maximum in the Used Cores setting.

Also check setting 6.16 and disable the Change Game Speed Automatically setting. If enabled, that can cause slowdowns from what I've read.

This is VARY strange!  It is extremely rare for the game to crash for me. 
I would try with NO mods. and re-download EVERYTHING.  Make sure the patches are the NEWEST patches.  It is possible that some mismatched patch is happening?  OR the Microsoft VC library that comes with the patch maybe not installed right?

How would I be able to tell if the MS VC library is installed correctly?

I just got another Critical Error 001 crash during my Shilovo campaign.  It was the first such crash in a few battles, so I thought I had solved the problem.  But it seems no.  At least the crashes are happening relatively infrequently -- although any crash during a campaign battle I spent over an hour setting up and playing is, to say the least, extremely frustrating --

I have a crash every time the tac battle is finished and I click to go back to operation..when I restart thankfully it's all saved.

I think sandman2575 have another issue.

P.S. 2wodin This happens with last patch (August 2013)? And you do not enable any settings fom the 6th section (special), like the fullscreen or hiding the desktop from operational to tactical battles?

Crashes happen randomly during battles.  I have not seen a pattern, that is, the crashes do not seem to be connected to any action or event in particular.  The battle will be going along well, and then suddenly, "Critical Error 001" crashes the game.   Huh?  And does not happen every battle, some battles play out fine start to finish, even long battles.  Others just crash at some random point.
