Title: Wishlist for small objects to place on maps!
Post by: Donken on March 11, 2012, 10:25:41 AM
With this i would ask all mapmakers or just average players to write down what object and items you want to see in the game. To give the maps that little special thingy or just for the immersion etc.
Like i did with the Tombstones and Crosses i made to Estnische!

A few examples to add would be this maybe?:

Lamp posts
Mail boxes
Fences
Wells
Stone walls

and so on. So here i give you the chance to maybe get what you want :D I will try to model the stuff you want after my ability.
The only thing i dont want to make just now is bigger stuff like bridges and houses etc, This is just the small details i will do for a start.
But be warned, this can take a while for me to do, I will model the things when i get bored of other stuff or when i got some extra time. So it can take a while (a month) or maybe one day, I cant answer that right now :D
So shoot away with your ideas or you imaginations, And dont be afraid with your requests, nothing is impossible.

And i would appreciate if reference pictures are given, That is not a must but it would make my life alot easier :D

Danke Donken! (Ok so you are a Swede)

I'm sure things will spring to mind, but perhaps a sand-bag horseshoe for a mortar or MG crew, or stone arch for the stone wall? Or I was thinking, if you placed some concrete slabs over a trench, does that make a bunker? Or edit the slabs into earth material, does that look like a trench bunker?

Title: Re: Wishlist for small objects to place on maps!
Post by: Donken on March 11, 2012, 10:51:56 AM
Good idea

But im not exactly shure how that is going to work without doing it like a unit, atleast not the sandbag nest. That is more of unit making where i need to place dummys and script the stuff, Not exactly what i asked for but shure, i will make a try to make a sandbag unit :D But its going to work like the concrete bunkers (DOT:s) we already have in the game.

EDIT: and yes im a Swede 8), and Danke is german but cool anyway ;)

What about real gun emplacements with logs and sandbags like in TvsT? That'd be a nice change from placing artillery and AT guns in those hollow emplacements or on the grass.

Tack sa mycket!

I want bust Lenin and Stalin! They were in the every soviet village. It's a historical accuracy. What about water-closet? Let it be at least one for the whole village :)

I want a portrait of the Fuehrer! They were in every German-occupied village or town.

As for the latrines ,they can use the gun emplacemnts if need be ;D

Tack sa mycket!

Varsågod! haha

Anyway guys, what i was thinking of with this thread was to model and add objects and items for maps. Smal environment details such as the examples i made in post No.1
Mg nests and gun fortifications is new units wich take me probably a few hours more per item to make. And with those i also need help from other persons. So that is a no go :D
But still i will make a sandbag object and hopefully the mapmakers can use it somehow, Maybe hide mortar teams behind it or something?

(http://img694.imageshack.us/img694/1456/sandbagwall.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/694/sandbagwall.jpg/)

This is what i can do without making the polycount to high. Modelling sandbags in low poly is alot harder than you can think of :D Hopefully that is enough.

Ah frinik and lockie, That is way to complicated and advanced. To much work for to little gain =) Modelling statues/humans is also not my strong side

Hi Donken

I think that sandbag emplacements are the main thing that's missing, and they'd go well with the entrenchments and barbed wire.

Maybe they could be done in sections, like a fence, so you could combine curved and straight sections to fit the trenches or dugouts.
No need to model every sandbag, just a good texture and bump-mapping will do.

Something like this:

Small update!

I refined the sandbag so now its fully modular and you can place it however you want. they all fit in to eachother. But no bumpmap in the render!

(http://img28.imageshack.us/img28/3452/sandbags.th.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/28/sandbags.jpg/)

And here i tried to make a modular hedge/hog. Atleast a tiny start for making a western front maybe? Also fully modular. And no bumpmap on this one either!

(http://img696.imageshack.us/img696/6386/hedgemodules.th.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/696/hedgemodules.jpg/)

And what about railroads? Also fully modular to make the rail go wherever you want!

(http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/3722/railroadmodules.th.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/4/railroadmodules.jpg/)

EDIT: added railroad render.

Oner small thing which would be ncie and realistic are road signs indicating distances or the names of villages, hamlets etc.Or may be milestones or both???

Title: Re: Wishlist for small objects to place on maps!
Post by: Donken on April 02, 2012, 10:18:16 AM
I have thougt about that actually :D It is a good idea. But i think i need to collaborate a little closer with mission makers for it to be best. Specially if it is gonna be a historical mission with village names etc. Its hard if not impossible for me to know all village names i need to do for example. So lockie, Kyth, Rends and all other mission makers for example can write in this thread and ask for the signs they want and i can fix it. I can do all physical signs (the modell). But they need to change their sign texture after what villages and signs they want :D

This may not exactly fit under the heading of "small object" but could definitely be used as eye candy for the mission editor. I'd love to see unmanned or visibly damaged units which could be used to simulate a prior battle area. Recently I inserted a Tiger without crew thinking it would be a static unit( dead tank?) and it has a running engine and the headlights are on at night. Not what I was looking for.

  Anyway guys, just a thought.

Cheers
H

Hemi; great idea! Having the remnants of a battle; charred tanks and trucks wrecks, destroyed guns. Not sure if the coding would allow it though...

Kyth with Arugula( sounds like an Italian salad????) and Glug but I would want Kythograd, Kythangelsk and Kythovsk added as well... ;)

Title: Re: Wishlist for small objects to place on maps!

Hemi and frinik: yeah, if you have tested lockies mission with my Jagdtiger you can see at the beginning a wrecked Jagdpanther (so wrecks works). Im not really shure who made it and how. But it is possible and worth thinking of!

And about signs i will try to think about something to make it easy for everyone to make their own signs by just changing texture and add it in the editor.

Anyway, i have a question.

(http://img689.imageshack.us/img689/3472/hedgehogigm1.th.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/689/hedgehogigm1.jpg/)

This is when i finally got the hedgehog igm and i finally learned how to put in objects to a map (yaaaay, only took 10 hours or so) But as you guys can see all hedge modules are not following the ground, its like they only have a contact point in the middle where they stay They are just standing at a complete perfect horizontal line, So my question is: is it because of my model/config or is it something i need to do in the map editor to make objects following the ground?

And also, is it possible to change ground levels (height map?) in the map editor? I need to test the railroad modules but cant find any ground flat enough that i can put objects in :D Or is someone willing to help me test out all new objects? So i dont need to play around in the editor for several hours just to put in one object :D

Donken  - if I think I understand what you are trying to do, the game seems to be able to do this itself. For instance if you make a dirt road, it follows the ground exactly. If you make a paved road, it creates cuttings and embankments automatically.

if paved road is flat enough, could it be the 'bed' for your railroad objects?

Title: Re: Wishlist for small objects to place on maps!
Post by: Donken on April 15, 2012, 06:15:14 AM
Yes, Great Estnische. I think the roads is exactly what is needed for the railroads, Is it possible to make the roads smaller? The railroad modules are pretty wide already so as long the road "covers" 80% underneath of the railroad width it would be perfect i think. But this is not my area, so beta testers needed on that also so i can adjust the model if needed =)

Well, you are still 10times more experianced then i am :D Anyway, after you showed the road thingy i came up with this:

(http://img820.imageshack.us/img820/5905/railroadigm2.th.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/820/railroadigm2.jpg/)
(http://img195.imageshack.us/img195/3562/railroadigm1.th.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/195/railroadigm1.jpg/)

So i think that in the hands of an experianced mapmaker this could be very nice :D
And yes i also have the curves, just havent fixed the collision boxes for them yet, wich was a pain in the ass to fix on the straight modules btw ^^

I have some good news and i have som bad news, The good ones are i found out how to make all objects to float on the terrain (look hedgehog screenshot, they are not floating) and the bad news is i tried to fix that on the rail modules but found out that items you want to float can only have 1 collisionbox and the railroad segments are using alot more (so the tanktracks bend over the rails for example). So i cant use floating on the railroad. This means the mapmakers need to do the railway 110% flat during the map creation on the whole rail to make them fit exactly to eachother or i can remove all collision boxes on the rails. What do you guys think?

Have to wrap my brain around this one, what's a 'floating' object? And how is it somehow limited to only one collision box?
I suppose you can set a long, narrow contour to an absolute height value, to maintain its 'flatness' for the railway track.

From what happened with the examples I showed of cuttings and embankments for the paved road, I don't think that it is realistic to have a road even 100% flat  ;D. Am I correct in reasoning that the game makes cuttings is to even out the sloping terrain?

For the purpose I would use a railway, the Battle of the Tannenberg Line, it can be dead-straight and dead-flat. But it was built on an embankment to raise it above the marsh. The Soviets used the embankment for bunkers. But I would think 99% of map makers would have to cope with uneven terrain in the railway. Also, have you considered the tiling issue? Where does the railway go at the end of the map?

Title: Re: Wishlist for small objects to place on maps!
Post by: Donken on April 16, 2012, 08:54:52 AM
I will try to explain in pictures.

Picture 1:

(http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/562/railroadigm3.th.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/3/railroadigm3.jpg/)

Here are all collision boxes added to the config, As you can see the game engine only calculate the segment from the pivot point or s_root in the object editor. So if the road is a little to steep somewhere you get this result. But still, All collisionboxes works on these ones, The tanks drive over it as they should and everything. Very smooth and good transition between ground/railroad.

Picture 2:

(http://img813.imageshack.us/img813/2330/railroadigm4.th.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/813/railroadigm4.jpg/)

Here i have commented out the collisionboxes for the rails and all but not the main box, Here the game engine calculates the whole model when it puts it on the ground, As you can see both ends are at the same level on the ground on each segment. But now there is only one big collisionbox and that makes the whole segment. And that makes whatever going over it very wierd.
Sofar of what i have learned is that all objects can only have one collisionbox when you want them to "float/following" the terrain, As soon as you add one or more collisionboxes it wont work.

Try to see for yourself what i mean, place one plate on the map (following surface as rail in picture 2) and also place something like a bench (not following like rail in picture 1) and put them on a little steep hill or on a very bumpy spot.

One other idea would be to find another type of object/item/vehicle type or something to put the rails on the map? Because now they are just counted as object similar to fences etc in the editor.

And Estniche, Railroads irl today are very flat actually, its only a few % degree up/down per 100m. back then probably not so good but still they should have been pretty flat. But the problem is the whole sloping of terrain, not the small tiny bumps :D All small bumps is even out by the model if you look at the pictures.
And about tiling issue i have no idea how far you can put stuff. This is kind of the first time i have tried to do something in the map editor so i have completely no experiance with this kind of stuff :D

Title: Re: Wishlist for small objects to place on maps!

Okay, I'm slowly starting to get it.  ;D I'll try to figure out a work-around,

Meanwhile, just to let you know it's possible to set an area to a uniform height, using "hill" with an absolute value. For example, the contour below is set to an absolute height of 4.5m:

Title: Re: Wishlist for small objects to place on maps!
Post by: Donken on April 16, 2012, 09:29:43 AM
Ah great Kyth, i will test this and see what it cames up with :D

EDIT: And this was the testing:

(http://img607.imageshack.us/img607/49/railroadigm6.th.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/607/railroadigm6.jpg/)
(http://img254.imageshack.us/img254/2341/railroadigm5.th.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/254/railroadigm5.jpg/)

Seems are perfect and you cant see the single modules! And all collision works :D So that was exactly what was needed for the rails!

Because my lack of knowledge of map making and also im tired of trying to figure out everything i release a beta test here of the railroads. Problem is i think i need to remove all collision boxes or something. I got lots of wierd behavor on the rails sometimes when i have placed 30+ modules on a map. So here it is for everyone to test! The modules are slightly different then on the first screenshot. I removed the modelled ground so now its only the rail and ties (sleepers).

IMPORTANT: read the readme and also this is a "do it yourself" release, You do need to have almost everything unpacked from the games .datapack:s to be able to insert all lines by yourself.

Map Objects (http://www.4shared.com/zip/Mq3wnjp_/Map_Objects.html)

Feel free to ask lots of questions and give lots of suggestions :D

Hi Donken, rather than having railways lines which are more or less likely to be used anyway since we have no trains in the game why not make steel bridges???This is something we really miss in SF!The wooden bridges we have are crappy and more often when you try to make a column of tanks cross a river the bridge will collapse taking down most of tanks with it. Just a suggestion. Not sure if there are takers for the trains tracks?

Yes Norm, the bridges are destructible. You can take htme out with HE shells or the sheer weight of some tanks will make them crash.

I took a Jagtiger across the wooden bridge without a problem.
Unless something's really screwed up with the configuration, the bridges should hold up nicely.

Few people have the know-how to edit maps. Fewer people know about configuring new objects.
Out of this small subset, even fewer have the time to dig through all this,  :)

If you have the source files to the map, the 'flora_p' and 'flora_quant' parameters in the *.poly file need to be set to zero. Then you have to regenerate the map.

For the stock maps, you're out of luck, I guess.

Why don't you use the 'desert mod' maps? No trees to speak of,

Title: Re: Wishlist for small objects to place on maps!

oh dear, so its not possible to just clean a little area by for example 200x200m with countours or something? I think i do have the source files thou.

The desert mod maps have no trees and shrubs, just occasional patches of dried grass.

Title: Re: Wishlist for small objects to place on maps!
Post by: Kyth on June 06, 2012, 09:19:09 AM
I seem to recall now, there's a way of clearing vegetation in maps,

You'll have to define a contour and select some type of terrain like 'plowed fields'. Of course, you still need the source files to accomplish this. Remember to regenerate!

This model is made by NSU and he has kindly donated it for use in Steel Fury. This model was made for MMP7 a T34 vs Tiger mod that we all worked on. Donken has kindly be patient enough to show me the basics of how to get objects in the OE.

Full credit to NSU for this model and a big thank you.

The hay stacks would be a great addition to Lajcak's planned mid summer mod and Littlebro's Scorching Summer one.... Very generous of NSU and the other guys to donate their work :)

Very nice clutter you've got there, especially the haystack & Zeltbahn tent.

If a headlight from a vehicle can be added to this lamp, we then have lit villages at night :)

looking good  ;D,i was just wondering if we could have some of the buildings and objects that was found in the ostpack mod of panzer elite?

Ostpak is my favorite PE mod to play, just a shame the newer PP2 tanks are not added. As for clutter from Ostpak, it will need to be made from new,
for this newer engine... PE is nearly a teenager :)

That's good Murkz, if you don't stack the logs too high we could use them to conceal artillery or AT guns :)

I'd like to have a try and use this post+light for the mission in town ;)

Unfortunately, my first try wasn't successful. Lamp doesn't want to work:(

Here is code which I added:

Code:
	//фары
lights()
{
//group name, chunk, side lamp, distance, radius, color
lights, s_light_01, false, 50.0, 40.0,  0xfffffff0;
lights, s_light_01, true, 0.0, 0.4,  0xffffcf50;

}

I still hope that finally we'll see the stack in the game ;)
(http://s5.postimg.org/m6i4dshzn/stack_normal.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/m6i4dshzn/)
At this moment I've managed to force the stack to appear in the Object Editor with a normal parameters(no distortion, no texture absence). This stack will be extremely useful in the ukrainian/belorussian villages.
Special thanks to comrade YL for his help in 3d modeling  8)

Hitler is a bad boy, Lenin is a good boy :)
That's why monument of Lenin more popular, but to say the true there are some towns, where ppl don't like a `good boy Lenin` .
I.e. Kyiv - the capital of the Ukraine.

Good news. Finally, I pushed the haystack into the game :D
(http://s5.postimg.org/9uoers8wj/haystack.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/9uoers8wj/)   (http://s5.postimg.org/6p3t1kqab/haystack1.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/6p3t1kqab/)   (http://s5.postimg.org/6qdquzs43/haystack2.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/6qdquzs43/)
There was one tiny secret, every object must has only ONE detail, i.e. db_hull or d_haystack. In case of additional details, the object become unpredictable and may appear on any parts of the polygon or stick to the user's tank :D
Now, I want to make a destroyable haystack, that will be very funny to see the parts of haystack, when it blow up!

Now haystack has 3LOD's and became destroyable ;)
(http://s5.postimg.org/m5mf8z18z/hayst_destr.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/m5mf8z18z/)
It's only first try, at this moment haystack consist of the one part only - `cover`. Fanny, but `cover` didn't want to fall down after strike. As it appeared, trigger `true` is responsible exactly for the "fall down". If it has `false` then part will stay at the same place.
stack_d,obj_cfg\objs.engcfg,01_des_cover,dust_br,1,0.012,3.1,0,0,0,0,true;
