Title: Mission: River of Doom (M36 `Jackson`)
Post by: lockie on July 16, 2013, 05:40:01 PM
This mission will be devoted to the new usa spg `M36 Jackson`. There will be `M3 halftrack`also and a new buildings plus stone bridge. It goes without saying, that mission will be made as a mission-mod ;)
But this time I'll upload a mod SPM NTA 1.6 plus Mission pack 3.0, which has only two missions at this moment. Mission has alpha status, it works, but needs testing and adjusting.
Tasks:
- force the river over the bridge (or fords)
- capture european style village (at least I tried to make it so, though I was out of the hotel building ;)
A several screenies:

Can we have a title that sounds a bit less cheesy? Instead of Doom River which sounds like a grade B Hollywood horror flick  ;)why don't we call it " A Bridge too Many " or " The Crossing"?

a bit less cheesy? Instead of Doom River

Some alternatives:
- 'River of Doom'
- 'Down the river is your Doom'
- 'Going down the river? You're doomed.'
or
- 'I'm crossing you in style someday'

 ;)

When u try to cross the river - that will be for u a terrible mess (proper fock) :) I promise that name `doom river` exactly means what it does ;)

- 'River of Doom'
- 'Down the river is your Doom'
- 'Going down the river? You're doomed.'
or
- 'I'm crossing you in style someday'
OK, what abt `Doom Bridge`?
I can cross it only at the balance "1" :D

Bridge of Doom?

Title: Re: Mission: Doom-River (M36 Jackson).
Post by: lockie on July 17, 2013, 11:45:25 PM
Bridge of Doom?
Well, in fact I wanted to play with a name of the russian fiction by Shishkov `Ugryum Reka`. In english - `Gloomy River`, but I wanted to force an accent and named it as "doom" instead "gloomy".
So, in my variant I wanted to force something like - "Mission Impossible". i.e. "Doom River".
Anyway, u'll check it out soon ;)

And there are some `papas & mamas` from the mission :)
This mission has a real mess! Even me, as a mission creator, can't get it over at my wish.
I like it very much! Well, of course, it's my biased opinion, but this mission has a very big choice of unpredictable behavior.  I played this mission more then 50 times and each time I had a bit other scenarios. Nobody can overrun a stupid AI))) (Thanks to the `object bridge` :D
Now I'm playing at the balance "5".
Ally "3"
Enemy "2"

(http://s5.postimg.org/hkis1wxsj/b_001.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/hkis1wxsj/)
U may cross the bridge only, if u have a seat as a driver.

(http://s5.postimg.org/6yywpwrgz/b_002.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/6yywpwrgz/)
Sweety Panther :)

(http://s5.postimg.org/ajus94w0j/b_003.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/ajus94w0j/)
I like JT burning! :D

(http://s5.postimg.org/hbl7bzl03/image.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/hbl7bzl03/)
This kittie caused me a problem, but I got it over ;)

(http://s5.postimg.org/irwpu4nwz/b_004.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/irwpu4nwz/)   (http://s5.postimg.org/4a43zvlzn/b_005.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/4a43zvlzn/)
Finally, the Victory! I've lost  two members of crew - driver and gunner. (I've always take a seat as a driver, but sometimes change a place :)

Uhhhhh Jagdtigers in Normandy in the summer of 1944???They only appeared on the battlefield in October 1944. May be substitute them for Jagdpanzers IV L70 or Jagdpanthers instead(there were some in Normandy)

What about Impossible Doom ? ;D

Seriously may be the Bloody Bridge or River of Blood????

OK, let it be 'River of Doom' :)
And mission is a part of the game, So, anybody may change any units at his taste.
I'll change JT on JP L70 :)

I decided to upload `Mission pack 3.0` (including mission `River of Doom`) anyway, cause there is a bug which I can't fix. Sometimes (very rare) mission CTD and I don't know why.
Suppose, there are next possible mistakes which may take a place:
1. Lid of the turret has a chance to appear or not (M36).
2. loader can shoot from MG out of the turret (M36).
3. Too much units on the map.

Recommended installation order.
1. Steel sound mod v1.1
2. Unofficial Patch SF v0.1eng
3. SPM 2.0
4. MP 1.0d
5. MP 2.1
6. SPM (NTA) 1.6 (http://www.4shared.com/file/ZIVLOVKc/spm__nta__1.html)
7. Mission_Pack_3.0 (http://www.4shared.com/rar/mO8ySzFJ/Missions_pack_30.html)

`Mission pack 3.0` consist only of two missions at this moment:
1. Kashara          by SVN
2. River of Doom by lockie

Thank you very much for the new mission pack !!!

I have noticed in the Russian forums that there are 2 new sets of missions by Deviator:

http://www.sukhoi.ru/forum/showthread.php?t=49560&page=48&p=1953598&viewfull=1#post1953598

http://www.sukhoi.ru/forum/showthread.php?t=49560&page=51&p=1993567&viewfull=1#post1993567

Have you thought about adding them to Mission Pack 3.0 in the future?

Thanks again for all your work on Steel Fury. It is much appreciated !!!

Lockie. I downloaded the MTA (NTA) 1.6 - 351kb, but how to open the file I do not know.
Oh, first unpack it then place to the folder ...Steel Fury - Kharkov 1942\MODS\
Then enable through JSGME.
I'm a bit confused abt er question.

I have been able to download the file properly.

The problem when I downloaded it (some hours ago) was that the name of the file was just:

SPM (nta) 1.6

I had to rename it to:

SPM (nta) 1.6.rar

to be able to unpack it with winrar.

Perhaps that problem is corrected now?

I think it was my problem. I didn't suppose to see `spm nta 1.6` without `rar`extension. Can u check it once again?

Well, I have downloaded the file again.

This time it has been downloaded perfectly, with the proper name:

spm (nta) 1.6.rar

The problem seems solved.

I had to use my tank to push others out of the way or right along the bridge to the end...but my maingun got damaged so when I got to the village I was killed by a Panther :'(
Maybe next time I'll try a ford...

Post by: lockie on July 21, 2013, 12:39:07 AM
Maybe next time I'll try a ford...
It's a good idea to cross over the ford ;) There is always AI problem with bridge crossing ;D
 Recommended mission balance indicated in the history briefing, before mission downloading. It is `5-6`. Ally experience `3`, enemy `2`.

BTW
Firstly, I placed user spg randomly (one of the three places), but mission was too complicate and finally I decided to place user in front of the bridge (to avoid misunderstanding).

PS
Unfortunately, I got first bad report. Mission successfully started only 3 times from 10 :( This is because of cockpit error of M36. Still can't figure out what the problem is :(

LSM if the size of you NTA 1.6 download is only 351 kbs then you have a problem. It should be in megabytes not in kilobytes...Once unpacked the size of it increases to 955 mbs...

I use IZarc to unzip it. It's a free program and it's very easy to use.You just right click and chose where you want to place the unpacked file.

It loads in the editor OK..

The problem with a cockpit. I'm sorry for this bug  :'(
So far, I may suggest a temporally fix. There will be only M36 with gunbrake and 50% of lid appearance. It should decrease CTD. See first post to d/l.

Install it after `NTA 1.6`, i.e.
SPM 2.0
NTA 1.6

As it appeared, M36 is not guilty with a CTD problem in the mission :) I replaced all M36 on M4A3 and got CTD again. I'm getting close to idea that CTD happens because of the big number of the units.

Once again I've checked the mission and I may say that problem with a BIG quantity of the units. So, I'll think how to decrease them. Well, to say the truth  I don't want to do it :) Anyway, let's see what we can do.
And I've managed to get a victory on the `6` balance!

Looks quite impressive! ;)
Did u change mission triggers or just put user in the panther?

PS
And there are a couple words abt my long story with a mission CTD :)
After painassed investigations, I found out that I made a terrible mistake. In readme to NTA 1.6 I wrote that all gunsights became unbreakable. Well, in fact - no. In fact, I removed all CAPs from all gunsights  ;D ::) :D
That was a problem with a JP MGunner. A cap was attached to the hatch and AI sometimes tried to open it, but could not - CTD...
I made another quick fix to see how it does. See first page to d/l. So far, mission still under investigation.

Still digging a mission and found out that german helmet has ~15000 triangles and ~44000 vertexes! And of course, model has only one LOD. It looks good, but ~15000 triangles are too much for one soldier. I replaced it with original one, which has 3 LOD's, 480 triangles and 332 vertexes. I'm pretty much sure that my choice is obvious. Suppose, I need to make a detailed investigation of all `Dinky Toys`, which german soldiers were awarded :)

Lockie my friend have you considered upgrading your drivers??? The 275 are at least 18 months old. I use the 320 on my Nvidia GT560M on my laptop they are from April 2013 and they work very well. If you are keen on Nvidia then try the GTX 650  boost 2 GBs which is way better and at about the same price. Otherwise AMD-wise the HD 7850 2 gb is roughly the same price and hard to beat according to Tom Hardware`s website.

If you are keen on Nvidia then try the GTX 650  boost 2 GBs which is way better and at about the same price. Otherwise AMD-wise the HD 7850 2 gb is roughly the same price and hard to beat according to Tom Hardware`s website.
Its too late, I've already bought gtx 560 :)

Just checked out a stock mission with Matilda and there was no CTD!
It does that smth wrong with a new us units :(
I'm still under a question.

Did you create the bridge? It needs stronger walls in a funnel leading onto the bridge. Too many vehicles break through the sandbag wall and plunge into the river beside the entrance to the bridge.
I just cannot get vehicles to simply drive straight and go across the bridge....the ai is stupid! stupid! stupid! ...it just goes around in circles instead of going straight from one contour to the next.

and trying to get vehicles across the ford East of the bridge is also difficult...they all want to drive into the river East of the ford???

Nope, but I made a polygon with mentioned bridge. Let's say, if u managed to implement a bridge on the polygon then u become a real `master of disaster` :D

Quote

No, perhaps it needs more accurate contour limits, which leads to the bridge. U can play with it. Switch to the mode `editor` and have a look.

Well, it's possible to increase a weight of sandbag, i.e. 100 tons ;D

Quote

U should use a separate units, I mean - don`t use a platoon of M3 apc, instead use four separate apc with the same script of moving.

In my mission a units come across East ford and West.

How to change the sandbag weight?... is it the density slider?

I tried to be clever and changed the sandbags for block no. 3 (dragons teeth) but they all shy away and will not cross... :P

There is a file
...\data\k42\loc_rus\levels\LEVELS\obj_cfg\objects\fences.engcfg
Find variable sandbag_straight(), change(increase) the next parameter mass=1000;
Let it be 1000000  ;D
I think no any units won't move it with such weight :D

One possible solution to the problem of the AI diving straight into rivers or lakes is to create forbidden zones on the maps on river banks etc but I have no clue how to do it.

Also in each of the tech_cfg file there`s a bb round value like for the Ferdinand below:

   //ðàçìåð òåõíèêè ïðè ïðîâåðêå ïåðåñå÷åíèÿ, ì
   bb_round   =   6.0;

The higher the value the less likely the tank or apc will meander and drive straight however according to Zlad by increasing the value it increases the likelihood that the AI will misjudge the depth of a water crossing and drive straight into deep water instead of going for shallow water. The default value in game is 5 but has been increased to 6 or more in recent mod to keep the AI from zigzagging when driving vehicles. I wonder if lowering the value to 3 or 4 would reduce the losses of vehicles and make them ford instead of drowning like lemmings?????  I will experiment see what the results are.

I tinkered with the bb round values of several tank ultimately adjusting the value from 0.6 to 0.3 and I can report that at 0.3 the tanks are less prone to "drowning" or misjudging the depth of water when fording or being close to any type of water surface. Not sure about crossing bridges yet.

Regarding the AI units, their normal path-finding routine goes out the window when they're under fire, so they don't appear very bright in that aspect.

My configuration steel fury :
-unofficial patch SF 0.1 Eng
-SPM v1.5 beta
-SPM 1.5 ultimate update
-SPM 1.5 ultimate update patch june
-mission pack 1.0d
-mission pack 2.1

-mission pack 3.0
-fix SPM (NTA 1.6) 0.1

Please tell it's my configuration correct? or any suggestion how to fix that?
Thanks

Woki, it's my fault :(
Unfortunately, SPM (NTA) 1.6 is still unstable  :-\
But finally, I've managed to find at least one error, which caused CTD. This is a wrong format of sound. It must be: 44kHz, 16bit, mono. But there are some files with: 22500 Hz, 4bit, mono - which are incorrect.
As a temporally solution - remove fix SPM (NTA 1.6) 0.1 and try again.
If u got mistake at ~98% of the mission downloading, then try to start once again. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. I'm still digging. Hope after a couple weeks I'll release a stable mod.

Based on my experience it means there's something missing in the matlib or texture files.

Compare your matlib entries for the M30 in your matlib folder( here's the path in my intallation
E:\Steel Fury - Kharkov 1942 NTA1.6 v2\data\k42\loc_rus\config\matlib
)and see if they compare to mine below:

 M30()
   {
      shader = editor;
      textures = m30, m30_bump, mudnburn;
      parent = GUN;

      diffuse = 1, 1, 1, 1;
      ambient = 0.301961, 0.301961, 0.301961, 1;
      emissive = 0, 0, 0, 0;
      specular = 0.698039, 0.698039, 0.698039, 1;

      power = 32;
      detail_tscale = 0;
      detail_scale = 0;
      bump_scale = 0.5;
      fresnel = 0;

   }// end of M30

   M304_90()
   {
      shader = editor;
      textures = aps_m304_90, aps_m82_90_bump;
      parent = SH_M36_90;

      diffuse = 1, 1, 1, 1;
      ambient = 0.121569, 0.121569, 0.121569, 1;
      emissive = 0, 0, 0, 0;
      specular = 0, 0, 0, 1;

      power = 12;
      detail_tscale = 8;
      detail_scale = 1;
      bump_scale = 2;
      fresnel = 0;

As it appeared a reason of CTD on the 98% mission downloading was a polygon itself. eu_m36_west was generated with error(errors?). That's why any mission on the current polygon will have a chance to get CTD. Perhaps, I should re-do polygon from the scratch.

`Thanks` to the mysterious error of the "98%" I found/fixed a big number of mistakes ;D
And a new one became a missed `object gates #5` from the mod `New_builds_v2.0` by Stone2009.
(http://s5.postimg.org/oo8swric3/gate5.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/oo8swric3/)

As it appeared, if I'd remove all `stone post #5 ` from the polygon then mission would downloading without CTD.

Another mystery  ::)

Probably because it's missing in the Mission Editor???

No, it wasn't written in the fences.engcfg file.
And according to my experiments a game engine cannot handle properly the number of the objects, which is more then 1700 pcs. But this is my pure guessing :)

I changed all `lonely stone posts` on the `stone gates #5`. The total number of the all objects is 1664. So far it works :)

Re-download MP3.0 and d/l a new mod NTA1.7 alpha. See first page.

with new mod pack and 1.7 ....I still get 98% CTD
if I unload the sound pack it loads....but CTD about 5 to 10 minutes into the mission

I'm getting really pissed off with this piece of shit.... does this mean all the unloading and loading mods in JSGME has corrupted some files and I need to start again with a fresh install...and also replace all the mod files in my MOD folder with fresh ones? ...a real PITA. >:(

is it necessary to install all the missionpacks or not?

Relax! Perhaps you need to take a step back and try a few things:

1. Uninstall ALL the mods and return to the vanilla version, then reinstall the mods in the recommended order.

2. Avoid manually editing any critical files such as common_res, common_units (anything in the 'common' folder, actually) after activating any mods.

3. Do the CTDs happen for other missions (using other maps), or just this one? If other missions have the same problem, perhaps there might be a driver issue.

4. Speaking of other missions, you should take some time out and give them a try? There's a ton of other user-created missions and campaigns.

This hobby should be a non-aggravating one.  ;)
Good luck!

Have you tried the original missions in SF, i.e the campaigns and single missions? Do they also crash or is it just your user-made and Lockie's mission pack?

I'm pretty sure that `98% error` caused a polygon. That's why I re-created it. Check out the file:
...\data\k42\loc_rus\envs\eu_m36_west\eu_m36_west.polypack
It should has 31 191kB (02.09.2013)
CTD during mission does incorrect sound.
1. Uninstall `Sound mod NTA1.0`
2. Delete folders:
...\data\k42\loc_rus\musics
...\data\k42\loc_rus\sounds
3. Install `Sound mod NTA1.0

Fabian Fred, you only need to install or enable the missions packs you wish to play. One thing you can do is have them all in your Mods folder. Only enable the ones you wish to play. The others you can keep disenabled in that folder they won't harm your game. In my experience the only problem with having many missions or mods enabled at the same time comes form the fact that some of them may have files either sounds ones or common res/common units that may conflict with other mods that may have slightly different sounds or common res/units files. SF is a very stable game but can be terribly fussy and frustrating when it comes to sounds and some basic files. The golden with this game and other is once you have a good, smooth running install make a back-up or 2 on an external hard disk or on a separate partition of your pc, on the cloud, on a usb stick whatever. This way you can paste the data folder of that good copy on any bad or corrupt install and make it work again painlessly. I have learned the hard way. ;D

No need, it's optional. MP3.0 is quite enough.

PS
If u still have `98% error` then try to remove `stone gates #5` and regenerate polygon.
