Title: Seelow Heights released
Post by: Rends on October 29, 2011, 11:41:16 PM
Just a sidestep project for all the late war big tanks.

Seelow heights early preview:

Because of the map size limitation the east (Oderbruch) of the map doesn´t look all flat at the horizon.

EDIT: Get it here:

3 playable missions. 1 from german and 2 from Sovjet side. Feel free to modify and reuploading the map :D

For additional realism it would a good idea to use Lajcak´s early Winter Mod since the battle took place in April 1945 which was cold that year. The docs taken at the time show bare trees .Also many of the Sov attacks took place at night with spots on.The nights were foggy or misty it seems ot me.

Checked the weather in April 45. What i found is that in Berlin (60km away from Seelow) it was about 12 degrees Celsius warm.
I read also a report from a Sovjet Pilot that the Landscape was fresh green even with flowers.
The early winter mod wouldn´t fit but trees also shouldn´t have leaves at april.
So it´s up to everyone if or if not make use of the early winter mod.

BTW: the terrain is very difficult for tankers. Lot´s of steep hills and other natural traps. Guess i need to add a lot of forbidden areas for the AI driver.

Nice work Rends, This map looks very promising :D

EDIT: About the weather. April in Germany is more spring then winter, Atleast here in Sweden so very unusual we got snow in april (Germany and Sweden are almost the same latitude, Sweden is only far more north).

Actually according to what I re read it was the winter of 1944/45 in Europe which was one of the coldest in the 20th century. Then Lajcak's early spring mod would fit better. The diificult part about recreating maps of countries or regions other than the SU are the buildings and landscapes which are very different. The lack of Western European type buildings even rural ones makes it very difficult to recreate campaigns in Central or Western Europe.

Rends how many units are you going to put into play?

Currently I am working on early spring mod that would be more appropriate for your map and mission I assume...

Good luck!

@lajcak
whow the spring mod looks very promising and seems to be exactly what this map needs :D

@frinik.
Well i havn´t done the mission yet. Still tweaking the map.
But for tests i placed the player platoon with 3 Tiger1 and two other platoon with 2x3Tigers too and one 88mm ATgun.
On Sovjet side i placed a platoon of 3 IL2 and 2x3 T-34/85 platoons.
Well i don´t need to mention that this was a very short onesided battle. Germans lost the 88gun only while Sovjets lost everything.

But for the final mission i expect 3x1 Tiger1 and 2 or 3 88AT guns against hordes of Sovjet tanks. So far i know the Sovjets had a 10 to 1 ratio at April 45 but germans very able to hold the heights for 3 days before overrun by Sovjets troops.

Rends , according to the relations of the battle the Germans had 3 layers of defence. The Soviets started pounding the first layer with a gigantic artillery bombardment but Henirici had anticipated that and had pulled most of his first line back to the second line thus the Soviet struck empty.Do you think you can create 3 lines of trenches and then start the mission with an intense artillery strike lasting about 10 minutes that would hit only the first line of trenches?I don't know if the Germans had Tiger Is but I know from youtube videos that they had Stugs IIIGs.

The balance of forces was totally lopsided with Zhukov able to throw carelessly the lives of his men wave after wave while the Germans had no reserves left thanks to Hitler's usual wise tactics. The problem in recreating such an intense battle in SF is the need to have lots of infantry which will send the fps plummeting. One way would be to give the German very few infantry in the trenches and have 3 dozen Sov tanks with infantry attacking a thin layer of German defences with only a handful of Stugs or Tigers and some Flak36 guns as anti tank defences...Either way it's a tough battle to recreate taking into account the small size of the maps in SF...

Luck!

Hi Rends! I am having a little problem with your Seelow missions.I installed everything and the missions appaer normal in the single missions menu and load normally with the pic of the mission but then after about 20% it crashes with the white screen.I decided to load very single file of your Seelow mod individually into my data folder, scripts, text, texture, levels etc but no luck. There's something missing but not sure  what.I like the map it's really neat!

Do you have your missions in datapack format by any chance?

frinik, do you have Kyth and Donkens newbuilding3 mod installed?

Title: Re: Seelow Heights released
Post by: hemisent on November 04, 2011, 12:52:03 PM
Frinik
That's odd. Usually I'm the one who has problems getting DL"d missions to play but in this case the missions (at least the German one) played perfectly right from the start. Of course I got killed repeatedly but it plays out very well. Could sure use some additional tanks helping up on those hills ;D

  Great job Rends!

Nice Rends, Those are some really good missions, Where the enemy flanks, gets in ambush etc. Its fun that i must use the brain to win them and its not only a mindless slaugther ^^

frinik, do you have Kyth and Donkens newbuilding3 mod installed?

Not on the install which I put your Seelow mod on.Why it's needed? If it's the case then I understand why it's crashing!

Title: Re: Seelow Heights released
Post by: Rends on November 04, 2011, 08:33:57 PM
guess we found your problem.

From the readme:

Seelow heights Version 1

1 german and 2 Sovjet side missions playable

Installation instructions:

First make sure that you have the JSGME mod enabler installed and that the Steel Panzer mod 1.5 beta (or higher) is enabled.
You need to activate the Newbuildingsv3 mod also...

:D

PS: It´s needed because i used the new buidlings on the map.

Boy thats weird Rends, I have played 2 missions of the Seelow Heights (Tiger I and IS-2) without the newbuildings v.3 mod activated (didn't even know about this mod and totally missed it in the readme) and had no crash? I didn't come close to winning either mission, maybe thats why.
Cheers

Without the mod you should have missing some buildings in the village and there would be also no windmill to the farther right if you start with the Tiger and climb the hill.

Building Mod installed and it looks much better with the new added buildings, great missions. Thanks again Rends (and all mission makers) for keeping us supplied with these gems.

I almost won the Tiger I mission on 6,  I was a little flustered by this mission since I had secured a good hull down position when I got the IS-2's, moved to another great hull down position where I got alot of the infantry and most of the T-34/85's. I was drawing a bead on the last T-34/85 in my kill box and while my loader was getting an AP round in the breech, I watched (from my gunners sight) as this picture perfect hail mary AP shot from that T-34/85 came straight at me....result: Heavily Wounded.......... I love this sim  ;D

If you set the balance higher you will see more of the sovjet stuff.

And yes. The Tiger mission miss the "Successfull termination" trigger. I had put it in on the Sovjet missions but forget to add it to the Tiger mission.

The Tiger mission is great. I finally managed to complete the mission with my settings on 5. Now I'll step it up a bit and see how long it takes to get killed again.

Outstanding job!

I beat it at 6! I'm so happy :D You have no idea how hard it was. I actually ran out of AP ammo and made my last 3 kills with HE shots :P

As you can see, it became a Close Quarters fight. I retreated up the hill after they cleared the first berm and knocked out 3 T34/85's while the lone Tiger and Stug Platoon covered my flanks. (I made one Tiger a Stug platoon so it'd be more fair since I was using a King Tiger) Then I pushed forward and knocked out something along the lines of 4 tanks who were in mid rush, 3 of which with HE. :)

Yeah but think of the poor gas mileage, politically incorrect loud exhaust, lack of creature comforts and it doesn't have federally mandated air bags. On the other hand, parking is never a problem.

I finally completed the mission on 5 so I figured I'd up the balance and made it 8. NOT! You can't believe how fast I got killed. Incredibly hard mission....I love this one!
