Title: Hi everyone, more new missions. (for the Panzer 38t)
Post by: Kyth on December 31, 2011, 06:05:06 AM
Good evening!

I have been blathering on about creating new missions for the Panzer 38(t) and so now it's time to put up and/or shut up!  ;D
Try it out and let me know what you think,

Kyth Mission 2_01

In this semi-historical scenario, a new offensive has just kicked off in Crimea. Now it's time for 22nd Panzer (that's you) to play a crucial part in the opening battles. Try not to screw up (heh heh heh)!

Get the mission here!

http://www.4shared.com/rar/DO07ZVtT/KythMission201.html (http://www.4shared.com/rar/DO07ZVtT/KythMission201.html)

And, add this line to the 'user_camp.engcfg' file:

KY2_01, txt_mc_mymission2_1, 1, 0, Back_KY201.jpg, txt_cit_02, 20, txt_history_ky2, trappenjagd, levels\levels\cm_users\KY2_01.level;

Other Installation requirements:

The following mods are required to run these missions:

i.  Steel Panzer Mod v1.5 (beta)
ii. SPM1.5 beta fix
iii. Unofficial Patch SF v0.1
iv. SPM1.5 NTA 1.3 or SPM1.5 NTA1.4 (choose either one)
v.  Popgunsv2 (highly recommended)

The “Popguns mod” can be downloaded  here:
http://www.4shared.com/rar/l6Qps8i1/Popgunsv2.html (http://www.4shared.com/rar/l6Qps8i1/Popgunsv2.html)
and activated / deactivated separately using JSGME. It's a modified common_res.engcfg file, based on 'NTA 1.4'.

Alternatively, you may want to change the following lines manually in the 'shells()' section:

Quote
PZGR(t)umg_37,0x01,%SHELL_AP%,KWK38(t)L/42,750,42,0.7,0.1,0,1,1,0,0.82,0.008,0.3,8,1,1,0.1,0,1,1,1,expl_gndl*,expl_techl*,expl_buildl*,expl_water*,expl_human*,fly1,0,1500,1,txt_shell_pzgr(t)_37,ap_expl_pat,rico_pat,piece_pat,0,1,1,1,1,0xffff4040,2,1,14,SHELL_MED,SHELLC_MED;

PZGR_50,0x01,%SHELL_AP%,KWK38,683,40,0.7,0.1,0,1,1,0,2.06,0.01,0.2,8,1,1,0.1,0,1,1,1,expl_gndl*,expl_techl*,expl_buildl*,expl_water*,expl_human*,fly1,0,1500,1,
txt_shell_pzgr_50,ap_expl_pat,rico_pat,piece_pat,0,1,1,1,1,0xffff4040,3,1,21,SHELL_MED,SHELLC_MED;

It's a pain, I know,  :-\ I hope these tweaks will get included in the next SPM update,

Good luck!

The Crimea? Sounds fun! Btw, for the uninformed, what does the Popguns mod actually do? :)

The Crimea? Sounds fun! Btw, for the uninformed, what does the Popguns mod actually do? :)

The Popguns mod  :) rectifies the standard settings of SPM 1.5, which make the 37mm and 50mm L/42 gun more puny than normal  :o

Here's something I wrote about the problem some time back:

Quote

Let's put it this way: you know they're underpowered when their shells persistently bounce off lightly armoured targets like the T-26, BT-5 and Panzer II  :o

I've addressed the situation a little by making the following changes to their ammunition in the 'common_res.engcfg' file:

Quote
PZGR(t)umg_37,0x01,%SHELL_AP%,KWK38(t)L/42,750,42,0.7,0.1,0,1,1,0,0.82,0.008,0.3,8,1,1,0.1,0,1,1,1,expl_gndl*,expl_techl*,expl_buildl*,expl_water*,expl_human*,fly1,0,1500,1,txt_shell_pzgr(t)_37,ap_expl_pat,rico_pat,piece_pat,0,1,1,1,1,0xffff4040,2,1,14,SHELL_MED,SHELLC_MED;
Upped the 'armour-piercing factor' from 0.55 to 0.7, slightly less than the PZGR_37.
Gravity factor changed from 9.81 to 8, consistent with the other shells in the game.
Effective range from 800m to 1500m, same as the Soviet B240 45mm shell.
Reliability changed from 0.8 to 1.

Quote
PZGR_50,0x01,%SHELL_AP%,KWK38,683,40,0.7,0.1,0,1,1,0,2.06,0.01,0.2,8,1,1,0.1,0,1,1,1,expl_gndl*,expl_techl*,expl_buildl*,expl_water*,expl_human*,fly1,0,1500,1,txt_shell_pzgr_50,ap_expl_pat,rico_pat,piece_pat,0,1,1,1,1,0xffff4040,3,1,21,SHELL_MED,SHELLC_MED;
Upped the 'armour-piercing factor' from 0.5 to 0.7, slightly less than the PZGR_37.
Effective range from 800m to 1500m, same as the Soviet B240 45mm shell.

It's worth a try,

No worries.I just finished installing Rends misisons and played one.Works well but I had to add a //bar_camp entry on top of the recommended line in the camp folder otherwise his missions did not appear in my game menu. Now your mission.I am going to re-install it in a different folder!I almost won it and it's my priority now!

Bests for 2012!

Finally managed to re-install yoru mission played it.It took me 2 attempts to succeed( at balance 10).Good atmosphere. The beginning is easy and luyll you into thinking it's going to be a walkover until the Soviet cavalry comes charging. The P38t surprised me.Fairly good tank but a little slow.Anyway, it's good to play smaller tanks like the Panzer III and Panzer1 38t.Makes you appreciate the need for tactics over charging like a horde of elephants.....Well done Panzer III Meister!I'll give it an 8.5/10.

Hi everyone,

I have a couple of missions planned with the Panzer IVF1, but I could switch them to the Panzer 38(t) instead, if there's great demand for it. What do you think?

Title: Re: Hi everyone, another new mission.
Post by: frinik on January 09, 2012, 02:36:31 PM
Personally I would vote to keep the Panzer IVF1.Nobody makes misisons for that tank although it was a workhorse of the German army until it's bigger brother the F2 ausf. came along.

I fully agree with frinik. Moreover the Panzer IV F1 has the interior modeled in Steel Fury and I do like to play using also the interior views :)

If anyone's tried out these little missions, do you have any helpful comments or suggestions?
Which would make them a better product, of course,

Kyth, could you do me a favor and create less unit numbers missions that will work on my low end System too? Most if not all of your missions crashs on my end here and i´m pretty sure it happens because of of to many (different) units on the map.
So if possible tweak the missions with the unit balance slider that it will be playable here too. Than i could give you a feedback on your mission(s) .
Thx,
Rends

BTW: It´s not only your missions. I have the problem with lot of other (most times russian made) ones too. I don´t blame the creator of the missions but the graphic card in my MacMini.

Kyth
I've played the first mission a couple times with force balance now at 8. The mission plays out well as do all of yours. I have no problem other than the puny t-38. I'm not used to the little panzer and it feels like I'm in a moving wash tub with a BB gun ;D.

You really have to figure out your tactics to get any kind of success because you sure don't have brute force on your side. As a whole I'd rate it very high on the scale. Well designed and executed.

Don't be offended if I substitute a pz-III and see how that feels.

Cheers
H

ps.          DL'd mission 2 and trying it out later

 Kyth
I already thought about the balance by changing to the pzIII and I suppose it wouldn't hurt to increase either the AT defense or add some additional armor. Anyway, just a thought.

Again, great work!

Yes, the added defenses could restore the challenge to the mission. Another idea is to use the short-gun Panzer III, which is only slightly more of an advantage.

I hope you enjoy the 2nd mission as well!

You know Kyth, I never thought of the short barrel version. I think that may be interesting. I don't want to lose the mission's challenge.

Dear Kyth,

I love your missions. I usually spend 3-4 hours playing them stock, and then I usually feel the need to make them more "late war" missions. Essentially, all those KV-1's become IS-2s, the Panzer38t's become Tigers or Panthers, and everything else gets upgraded to a T-34/85 or a Panzer III/IVf1. Keep them coming :)

Sincerely
-whukid ;D

Hello Kyth!  Finally installed your mission and got it working after a false start.Initially I was getting 005 error message " missing textures"????What was stranger was that instead of getting the usual poetic title of your missions I was getting in my user games list Ky_02_txt_mission etc. I scratched my head sicne I had installed the mission properly and it showed as Kyth mission 202 in my JSGME and I checked the line in my user_camp and it was fine. Then inspired by a muse I installed your mission 201 first and then enabled mission 202 and Lo and behold it worked! Played the mission at balance 10.I enjoyed your usual misty and rainy weather. The atmosphere was very good and with that dramatic SF music in the background setting to toen of the drama unfolding I enjoyed the battle killing 6 tanks until running otu of AP and then turning to my faithful HE except they were landing a few feet in fornt of my tank with a plop????I then stopped the game and checked my common res file where sure enough I found out that while making changes to the shell values as your ecommended I had accidentally erased the 7 from the shell velocity of the Panzer 38 t leaving those shells with barely 30 metres/second velocity ;D Corrected my mistake but by then ti was 12:35 AM and time to go to bed.So tomorrow Am your mission and I have another appointment. One thing is sure " Your missions never disappoint and are always well made and enjoyable!"Looking forward to round 2 wirth working HE rounds this time  :-[

Based on my limited experience I feel this mission will earn a 9/10 easily!

OK played it again.I was doign well; 8 tanks killed and on my way to the village when out of nowhere a side shot kills me.A T-26 stuck in a tree practically upside down shot me at 320 metres.... ??? ??? ???

All Sov tanks minus this one were destroyed for only 2 of my Panzers killed and 4 immobilised.Aghhhhhh! Will try again tomorrow as I have a computer under repair at home so I am not free to play as I'd like to. Good mission tough but good.Keep'em coming Kyth ;D

From my observation, the AI is plenty aggressive! Just that the 37mm and 45mm guns don't fire as loudly as the others. But they're blasting away, no worries about that,  :D

I beg to disagree Kyth. The 3 times I have played the mission( last mission ended prematurely with a damaged gun >:( ) the Soviet tanks - although in plain sight - would not fire until I had actually destroyed about 4 or 5 of them. They woudl advance oblivious despite being fired at...Ther AI in SF is unpredictable...

My default value is set at balance 10, with both friends and enemy's exoperience set at the max which is 4.In the ME I always set the exp slider at the max. level.I don't know may be I am too aggressive by nature and feel the AI ain't enough.

One thing I must say; after playing BF3 for a couple of hours playing a mission or 2 of SF is sooooo relaxing and soothing... :D

Title: Re: Hi everyone, more new missions. (for the Panzer 38t)

Kyth
Please don't take this the wrong way but as per our previous post I changed the player tank to a PZIII.
I then increase the force balance to 10 and taking a page from Frinik's playbook I increased the moral and experience of all the Russians to 10. That seems to help balance out the advantage of the PZIII over the t-38.

Also, to over balance the equation I created 2 additional russian tank divisions coming up from the river bank (one set at 40% and the other set at 60% probability). I used a trigger to make sure they don't move until the german tanks are well on their way to the village. The end result is an ambush where the enemy rises from the river bed and hits the Germans in their left rear quarter. Sometimes three tanks, sometimes six...sometimes none.

Your missions are great and I look forward to each and every one.

Cheers!
H

ps. What is the designation for the short barrel pzIII? I couldn't find it in the ME, only the long barrel version which doesn't make sense.

It's a mod:

Quote
The regular SPM 1.5 unit list does not include any playable Panzer IIIJ L/42. But it is possible to 'unlock them' with additional entries in the 'common_units' and 'common_res' files. Anyway, here's a set that I prepared earlier... based on SPM 1.5 (update 1.4):
http://www.4shared.com/file/Qu-4GhsS/PanzerIIIkz.html (http://www.4shared.com/file/Qu-4GhsS/PanzerIIIkz.html)

How to use:

After activating in JGSME, the new playable units can be found in the ME listing under 'Medium Tanks (Wehrmacht)':

First attempt! One of the toughest parts was getting my Panzer 38(t) to actually go up that hill ::)

Then it was a maze of AT and artillery guns, rain, wind, low visibility...The horror scenario for any tank commander.Good mission and Tough( Good work Kyth!)! ;D

Made it all the way to point 178 and got killed by infantry( grenades).Still bagged 7 76 and 122mm pieces and 2 T26.Not bad for a first try.

Back for more but I ll look for another way to climb that hill ;)

Thanks Kyth! You are back and with a mean streak :)

No it ain't!Between the rain, the slopes, the guns it's a real clobber-deal.Failed the second attempt.Killed by an AT gun I didn't see in time and cleverly concealed in a dead angle where my gun couldn't reach it. ::) but as Arnie once said" I vill be pack!" 8)

Maybe I am being stupid, but cannot get your mod to appear in the menu as indicated. I do not have user files in my camp folder so I renamed the files as indicated. I think the problem might be the 2 files appear as text files in the main camp folder rather than as notepad files. Dont know what else I should do.

Are you able to view the extensions for the text files? (They're ".txt"). I assume you're still able to do that in Windows 7  :).
Change the extensions from ".txt" to ".engcfg". There's no need to fiddle about with notepad or any other program.

ps. Yes indeed you can display file extensions in Windows 7:

At least, I think everyone's having an entertaining challenge.

Remember, I'm standing by with helpful advice and hints. ;D

I love your missions! My game seems to be broken though. Time for Re-install: round 3. -____________________________-

You know, JSGME makes things very easy.
You can activate / deactivate mods, reverse any changes made, change the order they're enabled, etc. etc.  Takes five minutes at the most.

Okay, then I guess you'll need to reinstall. Just to be sure, reinstall DirectX9 and update your video and sound drivers,

Just to let you know, Mission 5 is going to get even tougher!

I'm able to give you some helpful advice, if needed.

Just send me a PM,

I have to admit, the next mission will not feature the Panzer 38(t).  :'(
But, fear not, regular service will resume shortly,

Yes, which tank are you going to use as the player tank ?

Perhaps one tank with the interior modelled ?  :)

Let me ask another question:

Is it possible to install these missions on top of SPM 1.5 Ultimate Update?

Will they work properly?

And of course, thank you very much for the missions. I really appreciate them !!

Txema
They work satisfactorily with the "Ultimate" update.

Just a word of caution, there's something random about the "Ultimate" settings that throws the balance out of kilter every once in a while, and the shells start bouncing off light tanks again. The constant updates are also not helping with pinpointing the cause.

So I can only really vouch for satisfactory results with SPM 1.5 + NTA 1.4 + PopgunsV2.

That is not random, and has nothing to do with NTA 1.3 or 1.4. I just forgot to increase AP value for 38(t) AP shell. It's somewhat low now and should be set at 0.75 at least. You should report earlier about it in the UU topic. :)  I'll fix it in the new patch, for now I can recommend to update Popguns mod.

Is everyone ready for the next mission...? Doesn't matter, you shall now have your regular dose of adrenaline.  ;D

Kyth Mission 2_05

The unsightly, yet strategic mound that guards the route to the coast. You shall now persuade the equally unsightly occupants to leave their premises - mainly through the use of your 75mm!

Half time. The halfway mark. Only 5 more missions to go. The point of no return! Now its downhill all the way.

- Just right.

whukid,

Why don't you use the latest patch SPM1.5_ultimate_update_patch_(v.May 9th ENG) ?

It is just 100 MB and it includes the latest updates and fixes for the mod. Mistwalker has done/is doing an excellent work with SPM 1.5, paying a lot of attention to the details and trying to fix all the bugs and inaccuracies.

Moreover since you are developing your "1943 schemes" skins for that mod (thank you very much :)) it would be very good to use the latest version of the mod as starting point... don't you think so?

Thanks again for all your work !!

The tenth episode to this exciting series, the finale, the icing on the cake, etc. etc.... it is in the works, undergoing the final touches, as we speak. Watch out for it!

So you may ask, 'This mere trifle of a mission - How easy can it be?' The answer: Not very easy! But you can rest assured, I will be dotting all the i's and crossing all the t's and It Shall be Delivered. This is a solid commitment to you, the customer.

Hi,

I'd like to remind you that Rends has already put out six Kursk missions, playable from both sides. In addition to 3 Orel missions, covering the same timeline. On top of that, there are the Cherkasskoe mission from Stone2009 and Tiger_01 mission from yl9961027. Also, Frinik has put out numerous missions that are of that time period, you just need to ask him,

In summary, there's no shortage of such scenarios, go on, go try out all of them. Have fun!

Guys!Kyth's passion and dedication is to early war tanks! I think he made it clear that he will not make missions with the big cats!

I think it's great that we have missions with the Panzer 38 because nobody else would be interested in making them except perhaps Rends.I know people 's inclination and fascination is with the biggies but frankly the early war tanks are overlooked and it's great soembody has th epassion to give them their right ful place on the battlefied!

I meant do a Panzer III during the battle of Kursk. They made up approximately half of the German Panzer forces. Maybe it's just me, but I think Panzer III vs. T-34-76's and Zis-2's is much more promising in terms of super-hard-missions than early war stuff. Besides, all the other missions are only focused on Prokhorovka!

Oh well. Maybe I can look into making a mission or two once I'm finished with all my other projects :P

Woof! Encounter at Dzherkyibits( hehehe always Kyth's savy choice of names ;D) is oyur toughtest yet! Playing at balance 10 I broke my teeth twice. I mean there are like 25 Sov tanks including KV-1s on the battlefield.Decided to change tack and make the Panzer IVF-1 as the player's tank.Almost managed just to be killed by a pesky T-34 that just wouldn't die.Used all my shots even tried to take him out with the HL... This is an action-packed mission that begins with the "Pastoral settings' Kyth's way of making you know that you are entering the killing fields ;D

Excellent mission! Tough as hell and in Kyth's tradition you never know what to expect until you meet it! Very well done My Friend!I am going to try another time then time for mission 208.

Ouch Bad Kyth! Putting Soviet AT guns in ambush on the way to the rally point! That's sneaky of you ;D Got killed 2 minutes after the start of the mission. The second attempt was no better.A rout for the Germans. We took the village and repelled the Soviet counter-attack just to fall prey to all the AT guns in the clearing. My tank died the last with turret jammed( had to place my tank sideways to be able to shoot) , engine hit and finally killed by a 76 mm. Grrrr I hate the Panzer 38 in the game. They are so light they get stuck on uneven ground . Terrible tank. I was coveting the Panzer IVF1 which was accompanying me...Good mission tough for the Germans  but I ain't giving up!

Cheers!

:D It's a bit of challenge, but still beatable, I think (I've only ever done it at level 5),

Oh even at level 10 I will eventually win it( I have succeeded all your labours so far).Just makes it harder and forces me to focus more on startegy.I just wish my AI were smarter , somwhow they always manage to get killed at the beginning of your missions. ::)

What 's the next Panzer you are going to highlight in your future 10 missions series? The Panzer III J?The Panzer II C?

By the way, I neglected to mention I'll be pulling together a sequential campaign from all these missions.
It requires a bit of tweaking and modifications to the scripts, but it should be ready, eventually.

Remember, the campaign and single missions are not incompatible or mutually exclusive; you can have both!
It's a cake you can have and eat at the same time  ;D

Ave!

I hope you enjoyed the earlier missions, 4 to 7, in the series?
I wouldn't want you to miss any of the fun stuff,  ;)

I have enjoyed all the missions I have played in the Panzer 38 series. The only missions I haven't played so far are the 2 missions on the Japan X Ream map.But let the truth be known, I am planning on replaying all of them them with the Panzer III with the short barrel 37 mm gun instead of the Panzer 38t which I dislike.

The Panzer 38(t), I must admit, is an 'acquired taste'.
It does force you to think ahead and use good panzer tactics,  ;) and appreciate the later tanks better.

The problem Kyth is that the tanks in the game have no real mass/or weight. They get stuck on branches, trees, small holes. When I was playing your latest mission, for example, the moment I drove on uneven terrain the tank would stall and get stuck on the slighest bump or irregularity.Anyway the Panzer III with the short 37 mm is an early war tank but better than the Panzer I 38(t) in terms of mobility. The firepower , on the other hand, is not better.... BTW I have created its own sound for the MG37 ,No more of that terrible BESA sound for the Panzer 38's MG.... Even the BESA sound I have chnaged. The original XeeXeexee sound they make was getting on my nerves ;D

Try not to drive them into broken ground.  :D
Don't give up just yet! Your skills will increase by leaps and bounds, I'm sure of it.

Sometimes there´s no choice I have to follow my zug and there are lots of patches of rough terrain or simply fallow fields. I finally gave up on the Panzer 38(t).Replaying Fleas vs Gnats at balance 10 I simply run out of ammo despite carefully managing my shots and my inept wingmen and fellow tanks get killed leaving me alone to face the Red tide.So I substitute dit for the Panzer IVF1.Ahhhh what a pleasure to have a tank that doesn´t get stuck on a pebble and that actually can kill other tanks with one shot.... :)

Nevertheless, I merely say that the satisfaction of victory shall be immeasurably greater in the lowly Panzer 38(t).
Persistance and patience shall pay off in the end!
That is my philosophy, do not be tempted by the easy path, keep to the straight and narrow ;D
And of course, if I can do it, so can you,  8)

The easy path?????? At balance 10???? I face over 2 dozen Soviet tanks and more guns and infantry ???
