RAGING BRIDGEHEAD - (Peleshi, August 08 - 09, 1941)

On August 8, 1941, at 10:00 after an artillery barrage, 1TD was launched an offensive on the bridgehead near Bol.Sabsk. German tanks and infantry attacked at the junction of 286 and 173IR 90RD, in the direction of Peleshi. An offensive in this direction came as a surprise to the Red Army units.
The German 1TD 41AC units captured bridgeheads on the bank of r.Luga in the area of Bolshoy Sabsk. Germans, stubbornly holding the bridgeheads at Ivanovka, Porechye, Bolshoy Sabsk, continued to accumulate infantry and tanks in the Porechye and Sabsk areas, preparing for a further offensive in the direction of Krasnogvardeysk. 1TD takes defense on a bridgehead in the Bolshoy Sabsk area. Neighbor on the right - 36MID. 1TD is combat-ready enough to continue the offensive, despite the losses incurred in previous battles. The days spent in defense by the division were used for the repair and preparation of equipment and weapons. According to intelligence, in the 1TD defense sector, the enemy occupies fortified positions north of Yazvishche. 90RD units take defense at Bolshoy Sabsk. TYPHOON RISING - (Chervonnoe, September 30 - October 1, 1941)
  
At 7:30 September 30, after a 30 minute artillery barrage the German 24TAC main forces went on the offensive known as Operation Typhoon against the units of the Group of General Ermakov, thus preempting the beginning of the Soviet attack on Glukhov scheduled for the middle of the day.
In September 1941, the operations group of General Ermakov has been formed consisting of 21 and 52CD, 283RD, 121 and 150TBde. This group closed the 50km gap between Bryanskiy and South-West Fronts. In mid-September, Gr.Ermakov together with Colonel Akimenko Group: 2 gds RD (ex.127RD) and 160RD, reinforced with gds MTR, AT AR, 113tbn and destroyer units, received a combat mission to advance on Glukhov, which closed paths of the German movement from the direction of Shostka, Konotop, Putivl. Thus, capture of Glukhov would allow to block the path of the enemy movement from the west, and to close the gap between South-West Front and Bryanskiy Front.
By September 25, units of the German 24TAC, 2TA (3, 4TD and 10MID) began arriving in Glukhov area, preparing to advance on Moscow as part of Operation "Typhoon".
In the morning of September 29, Gr.Ermakov received another order to resume the attack on Glukhov at 12:10, September 30. 150TBde attacked with its main forces at the junction of 856 and 858RR from the area of Levshin - Gorelyy on Bereza and further from the north-west on Glukhov.
But at 7:30 September 30, after a 30 minute artillery barrage the German 24TAC main forces went on the offensive against the units of Gr.Ermakov, thus preempting the beginning of the Soviet attack.

Two operations of 11 turns for each of the sides (Chervonnoe, September 30 - October 1, 1941) covering the beginning of the Operation Typhoon.

EDGE OF STORM - (fst.Bulakhi, Ryabuhino, Krasnaya Polyana, October 19-25, 1941)

Battered troops of the 38 A are making a fighting retreat under pressure of the Wehrmacht's 6 A and 17 A south of Kharkov. Among them: 169 RD, 199 RD and 14 TBde which has lost more than 50% of personnel and most of its heavy weapons in previous battles.
By October 1941 the situation on the Eastern Front was catastrophic for the Red Army. Leningrad was sieged. German forces launched offensive towards Moscow, called operation Typhoon. In the south, more than 600 thousand soldiers and officers of the South-Western Front got encircled near Kiev. Fearing a repeat of the Kiev catastrophe the Supreme Command ordered the South-Western Front to move 80 to 200 kilometers to the east between October 17 and 30 and to leave Kharkov, Belgorod and Donetsk industrial region. Battered troops of the 38 A, carrying out the order, are making a fighting retreat under pressure of the Wehrmacht's 6 A and 17 A. Among them: 169 RD, 199 RD and 14 TBde which has lost more than 50% of personnel and most of its heavy weapons in previous battles.

Six operations of 4-12 turns for each of the sides (fst.Bulakhi, Ryabuhino, Krasnaya Polyana, October 19-25, 1941).

COUNTER BLOW - November 1941.

The offensive of 4A of Volkhov Front on Tikhvin, in November 1941. The Red Army is trying to block the German forces from 39AC in the Tikhvin area. German units are transferring reserves to this sector of the front.
The German command attached great importance to holding Tikhvin, in order to maintain the positions of 39AC for the spring offensive, and to maintain control over the railway line along which the German troops were supplied. Specifically the Tikhvin area was held by units of 12TD. To the south, along the road to Raplya, were the defense sectors of the 18MID and 8TD units.
In the Tikhvin area, the defense was occupied by the Soviet 4A, which held the front along the Volkhov-Tikhvin railway, screening Tikhvin from the north, east and south. 27CD, following order of 4A, reached r.Syas and r.Volozhba with its units with the task of cutting the Tikhvin-Raplya, Tikhvin-Rugui roads with a strike on Klinets-Rugui. Neighbor on the right - 60MRR (60TD) is moving in the direction of Gorodishche with forward units.

FURTIVE SPRING - (Fedorovka, Peschanoe, Nepokrytaya, March 13 - April 9, 1942)

The March operation of 38A in the Chuguev-Andreevka area, south-east of Kharkov. The Red Army units are moving through German defensive positions and crossed the r.Severskiy Donets on a broad front. The Germans are retreating, abandoning weapons and vehicles.
The March operation of the Red Army's 38A assumed encirclement and destruction of the German group in the Chuguev-Andreevka area, south-east of Kharkov. It was intended to deliver two converging concentric strikes for this purpose: 38A from the north in the direction of Rogan and Chuguev, and from the south (with the forces of 6A) in the Andreevka area in the general direction to Chuguev. At the beginning of March, the operation developed quite successfully, the 38A units crossed the r.Severskiy Donets on a broad front. GRIM OF DEATH - (Vinyagolovo, April 9-13, 1942)

The attack group of 8 A, reinforced by a tank battalion, is preparing to break through the enemy defense in the area near village Vinyagolovo. German 96 ID holds the defensive line along the bank of the Mga river.
In the April 1942 the Soviet command conducted regrouping of the forces at the Pogost-Konduya front. This area was occupied by 8 A units, which were to conduct a local operation to capture the area of village Vinyagolovo with a further development of the offensive in the direction of Belovo and gaining the rear of the German 28 Corps, which was defending on the southern shore of lake Ladoga. The German command was expecting an attack in the Vinyagolovo area since the beginning of April. In this area the defense was held by 96 ID with a total strength of more than 8 thousand people, having brought together over 10 battalions from various units.

COLD SPRING - Kharkov, in May 1942

The offensive operation of 38A from South-Western Front on Kharkov, in May 1942. The Red Army units break through the German defenses in the area of the villages Peschanoe and Nepokrytaya. German units retreat and hastily transfer reserves to this sector of the front line.
Forces of the Southwestern Front, May 12 in the morning, went on the offensive in the Kharkov area after air and artillery barrage. The strike was carried out simultaneously 28A and 38A from Belgorod-Volchansk direction in the north and 6A from the north face of Barvenkovskiy bulge in the south. 28A, the main strike group, breaks through the enemy defenses at the line Varvarovka - ht.198.3. 38A went on the offensive with the right flank in the area Nepokrytaya - Peschanoe, and holds defensive positions on the left flank. 36TBde units together with 226RD at 3:00 overrun the enemy combat outposts and captured a bridgehead on the west bank of Babka river near Fedorovka.
Plan of the attack of the right flank of 38A consisted of the following, at 7:30, 226RD with 36TBde attack 199.0 and then Nepokrytaya. At the same time, 124RD with 133TBde attack on Peschanoe, grove south-west of Peschanoe and further to Rogan.
Kharkov area is defended by units of the German 6A that provides stubborn resistance with fire and counterattacks for the advancing units, bringing up the reserves from Kharkov on vehicles.
